An interesting read thanks for sharing.
Had forgotten about Dutch Elm Disease - seemed to come along at the same time as the whole "acid rain" environmental story - is that still a thing?

We saw loads of elm in Lathkilldale yesterday, already bearing seed. The problem is that they don’t get very big before the beetle moves in to destroy them.

Lathkilldale has been badly hit by ash disease with those anywhere near the river path being felled for safety. There’s a lot of replanting of alternative species but with a poor success rate as far as could be seen. Hazel and willow seemed to have survived best.
