Apparently, so Brockworth Hedgehog rescue centre were telling me, a sheet of thick polythene at the entrance (like the curtains you see on factoy doors to keep the heat in.....but obviously rather smaller) deters rats from entering hedgehog feeding stations, as they don't like pushing things open with their noses.
