Car/van port sounds like a great idea.

I was wondering how enclosed it will be on the sides and if so if you had considered any wind loading?

I would like to put a car port in in the future but I am worried about wind

The prevailing winds blow West to East. It can get up to quite vigorous. If for example someone had 20 B&H and wanted to spark one up on the leeward sheltered side of the building. It would be this spot.

I don't give over much thought (so far) to lift. All the spaces I
knock together are over engineered. 6" instead of 4", 600mm centres on 4"x2" instead of 800mm. Beyond that though they are vented in some fashion or in this case built off a leeward gable end projecting out on a downward slope and then blowing straight into and through a hedge.

I am going to double up on the gable end 6" x 2" horizontal beam that it will all hang from. In fact I'll look into fiskers mounting soon and 4" x2" joist end hangers.

I respect the concept of lift but it never worries me. Additionally and for future builds of other folk. Go see a 6" post compared to a 4" or even a daft wee spindly 3".

If engineering for looks as well as structure stability, a short vdm or 2 makes a huge difference.

Can't beat a carport for some added roof area :D

Image

Same as Joe, I wasn't too concerned about lift, all sides open and some serious weight with all the timber & panels involved.

Where you located pudding?

Looks great where you are.

Kinda feel like altering this garage now to get one south facing roof after seeing all these van/car ports!

In between Bodmin and Lostwithiel, side of the Fowey valley, nice and exposed but lovely views on a misty morning.

Get modifying, only one chance to maximise area and orientation and get those panels up there!

Pudding, that is absolutely outstanding, what a look, what a spot! If I even get close to a look like that i'll be very happy. Our scale will be different though as the top of the PV on the van is 2,840mm off the deck so i'l needing a 3mtr space so i can jack up and remove a wheel if need be.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Any tips?

Any tips, hmm, make it square! Mine is a trapezoid shape in order to fit in between the garage and house, so the only level timber is the big beam across the front, every other timber is a different slope and different length, no 2 were the same as they are sloping across the trapezoid and none parallel/perpendicular with that front beam! Every timber rafter was lifted and offered into position in order to measure every cut, birdsmouth notch etc, so a square/rectangle will make things a lot easier.

Get help too, I did it along pretty much, apart from a friend help lift up the front posts/beam frame I put together on the ground and it was too heavy to lift up on my own.

All posts are on metal feet so no timber is on/in the ground, so hopefully they'll be no issues with rotting timber in the future, or for a long time! Rear posts in these - https://tradefixdirect.com/p/simpson-co ... 1MdfEkXSKS, and front 150mm posts on these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223279339831

I bribed No1 son last night with a 1" thick Aberdeen Angus Sirloin steak and a nice bottle of Fitou.

As he sat down to eat I said. This is me thanking you in advance for your help on the vanport. Q smile and a laugh, no problem Dad. :)

Great photos pudding. Thank you for the tips, much appreciated. We've went inground with the posts. A good preserver used and breadth of concrete. Hopefully they'll see me out.

Loving these carports

If you drop posts below the surface, most farmers soak the bottom of the posts in old engine oil for a while to preserve the wood for many years without rotting.
