UK Wind Record
Re: UK Wind Record
18MW prototype offshore wind turbine under construction. They just keep getting bigger...

Re: UK Wind Record
260m rotor diameter - that is staggeringly large!
Wow.

Re: UK Wind Record
When you think the London Eye is 120m, that is incredible.
Re: UK Wind Record
Thanks dan_b. Got me thinking about blade tip speeds. Only got as far as the circumference.....0.51 miles!
The day we were at Graig Fartha and with it not being particularly windy the blades were rotating at approx 10 rpm. So at that scale around 300 mph!
No wonder there's concerns about them breaking the sound barrier!
Re: UK Wind Record
You wait until you see the floating foundations that these lager turbines sit on. The 3 leg semi submersible ones are gigantic.
I'm working on a project at the moment and the proposed floating foundations weigh 5,000 tonnes each! That's a lot of steel!
Re: UK Wind Record
British steel? no dont be silly.
Re: UK Wind Record
Wikipedia shows that the first UK offshore wind farms around 2002 used 2MW turbines. 10 years later they were using 6MW turbines. Now, while not quite yet available, we're talking about 18MW. 54MW turbines in 2033 anyone!?
Re: UK Wind Record
Whats the difference in cost versus uk steel & carbon footprint.
Also, where are ripples wt2 built ? ..how long by the various wind output graphs till it hits carbon neutrality in its pre spare parts form?
1906 ripplewatts @wind Turb-ine-erry

Re: UK Wind Record
Both WT1 and WT2 are probably manufactured in Germany.
WT1 is Vensys.
WT2 are Enercon.
Solar panels become carbon neutral in about 3 years.
Wind turbines, steel concrete, blades, transport and all become carbon neutral in about 6 months, even less if they are winter months. I did back of fag packet calculation a while back and I will try and reference it if I can still find it.
So when a numpty down the pub tells you they will never be carbon neutral give them the finger, because there is no point arguing with them.
EDIT - Found it, for WT1, but WT2 will probably be even better because of economy of scale and a higher capacity factor.
