We have amber storm warning until 15.00 today,
and here, on top of that it is only predicted to go quiet until tomorrow (Sunday) evening, then getting blowy again for quite a while, >40mph in the night and again Tuesday day.
Good news for displacing gas, but with the low demand I'm a bit surprised that pumped hydro isn't recharging rather than delivering.
A
Is pumped hydro literally water up to a reservoir at altitude while there is excess RE?
Yes.

It was designed in the 1970s to use excess coal-generated electric overnight to pump water uphill to a reservoir and use it when everyone boiled their kettles in the adbreak of Coronation Street. Now used to even out renewables.

I see now that we are importing 5.5GW, with high wind gen and low gas gen.

Would that be because the import leccy is cheaper than gas generation, perhaps mainland Europe has lots of excess?

Sounds like a damn good idea to me, for wildlife too. Let's have plenty more of that.

National Grid ESO app says we hit peak wind generation of 18.431GW today. A lot higher than the grid watch numbers, presumably due to embedded wind generation estimates.

Possibly a record, but they usually have to crunch the numbers for a day or so before they announce a record.

Energy Numbers gives a better estimate of total wind including the embedded generation.

Highest on Gridwatch was 14.8GW at 5:20am this morning which is a record on Gridwatch.

Gridwatch suggests that embedded wind adds 30% more.
Only my opinion, but they seem to have had that figure for years despite the ever greater rollout of supply side wind, so I tend to use +25% as that brings it in line with Energy Numbers.

So, using my entirely unscientific, wet finger in the air, +25%, 14.8GW gives us 18.5GW, so looking good for a significant uplift in the UK record.

A ten minute snapshot does not make a record - but, if it was maintained for a full half hour, it would.

Gridwatch.co.uk shows that we have averaged over 14GW from wind so far today, that is the highest I've ever seen not sure if that wil be a record in itself.
