I have had a few Turnips over the years.

First 6 K.W one.

Blade hub fractured. Blades Capput. Landed fields away.
Top mounted rotation gear box failed. Blades came off again.
Top mounted power slip ring system failed.

Modified it to rotate at ground level. Power slip ring system done away with. Still working.

Various other little ones failed / Never produced Any Power.

A Gentlemen that lives in the same Village wants to have a go at one.

Any suggestions on one that works. Produces power. Is reliable.

A "turnip" can work in theory, however it must not be within 50m of any buildings and must be at least 2x higher than any nearby trees or whatever. It'd be great if you could whack a WT of any description on your house and generate 100W or so. The reality is this isn't possible!

Wind turbines do work, but you can't escape the fundamental physics of requiring laminar flow. Which means a turbine atop a tall tower and a long way away from buildings and trees. Anything else is snake oil.

What size is he looking at ? does he have a good site??
Anything by Marlec is good , Aerogen good (are they still going) -but these are pretty small ........... although 42w for 24 hrs is 1 unit of electricity......
Plenty of us here to advise on grid tie options ...........

At a domestic scale, plenty of proven and evance ones ~15yrs old and still spinning. They were the most common on west coast of Scotland and outer Hebrides on a visit a few yrs ago. Says something about long term reliability. Something let go on the neighbor's proven during the beast from the east and it's still down but being repaired. Our evance has had a few repairs, including rusted tail sections and quite a few pitch bearing changes. They all demand maintenance/repairs, which, if you're not getting FIT and paying someone else to do it, seriously eats into savings.

Probably worth logging with an anemometer at the location to see what's available for a while anyway.

...is it possible to put one up now planning wise? One that's not on a building or ridiculously close to the house, that is.

This one will need a bit of paint to make it look nice again.

Seems to have been 3 commercial WT failures in the past week, the multiple lightning strike flame ballet being almost graceful in its decline the smoke rings & blades melting, was a sight to behold.
