wind curtailment
wind curtailment
Wind to day is being curtailed to the tune of 5-6GW and exporting 2GW whilst we are burning 4GW gas and small amount of coal.
With better infrastructure we could 100% clean energy today and perhaps tomorrow.

Re: wind curtailment
Thanks for pointing that out, I would have missed it.
So at 16:30 we have wind and PV providing 80% of generation, with 4GW of export. And a price of -£75/MWh.
The potential really is great ...... when we get all the moving parts working well together. Should be a fun 10yrs ahead.

Re: wind curtailment
I seem to recall the national grid some years back saying by 2025 the uk grid will be able to run on 100 % renewables. Not sure if that is still the case.
Nowty Towers has managed it in summer for a decade.
3 kWh leccy import for June and that’s including two EVs and ignoring the Ripple wind farm.

Re: wind curtailment
Wonder how much curtailment there’ll be tomorrow. I’ve never seen Agile so negative!

5x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (12kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger
(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Re: wind curtailment
Carbon intensity of the grid is very low for the next few days with the wind and solar, but not quite record breaking.

Re: wind curtailment
Sunday morning wind being curtailed by up to 8GW when production is only 7GW . 3GW being exported. Still running with some coal presumably for grid frequency. The sun has not even started!

Re: wind curtailment
Yep, I recall that. I think they said it wouldn't happen by 2025, even for brief periods, but that the grid would be able to cope by 2025. So I assume(?) they mean voltage and frequency won't need steam turbines to keep them balanced?nowty wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2023 5:10 pm I seem to recall the national grid some years back saying by 2025 the uk grid will be able to run on 100 % renewables. It is a bit annoying to see that coal running, especially when gas is low. Could that be for servicing / maintenance reasons, the boilers need to be run every so many months ...... or am I clutching at straws?

I had a search for a live wind curtailment tool on google and it took me to here,

Almost £9 million today and counting. , national grid need to do the savings sessions in reverse, it has been talked about by them but they admitted it would be some years away.

This is why we ought have a useful tools directory of links put forward by members..
