The Shetland Tidal array now has 6 functional tidal stream turbines up and running.
Annoyingly they don't say how big they are - but on further digging, it seems each machine is 100kW.
So that's 600kW of power from the tide alone?

That is good, but it is only 1/10th of its near neighbour, MayGen which has 6MW up and running, with a cummulative 47GWh since 2016 (to October 2022).

Yeah not massive, but it all helps I guess?
How much power does Shetland need to run itself on average?

Re: Shetland tidal array expanded
I would think there's more suitable locations for smaller units than the larger ones so if there's different size units then we have mores scope for tidal energy contributions in more regions which has got to help.
Just think how much energy slips in and out of the Thames barrier each day ? Now imagine if the Mayor of London had a tidal power station installed and provided the power to the London Underground to enable them to pass those cost savings straight through to the customer - mass engagement with public transport anyone?
Seems better than just trying to implement punitive "transport Zones"
