With apologies if this has already received attention here but thought it worth highlighting once again if not.

Gilkes Energy has been awarded planning consent for its Earba Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) scheme.

The Earba PSH scheme is set to be the largest project of its kind in the UK, with an installed capacity of 1.8GW and a storage capacity of 40GWh, meaning that it can provide 22 hours of storage at full power. The planning application for the project was submitted to the Scottish government in early March 2024.

Yikes. So 1.8GW/40GWh and 1.8GW/36GWh schemes. They would be able to absorb an awful lot of excess wind gen to reduce curtailment, and then FF generation later on, when needed.

I wonder at what point Scotland starts to supply more RE energy, than it did from FF energy (oil and gas)?

Bit out of date now, but Gov figures previously suggested a storage power figure of ~20GW to achieve net zero. That figure would rise over time in line with the shift to 'electrify everything', and the energy figure would also be across multiple durations. But that 20GW and rising figure looks (to me) more achievable every year.

Planning consent was awarded to BESS projects totalling 1,590MW/3,179MWh of capacity last month, meaning the UK now has a total of around 55.4GW/117GWh approved.
