Seems like pumped hydro is all the rage again

The site’s unique topography and 500 metre gross hydraulic head allow for a more efficient design that generates more power and stores more energy than all other Loch Ness projects combined.

Good news and i think there are already anothe 6 in the pipeline in advance of this one.

All well and good but again its all in Scotland, have we learnt nothing from the wind farms ? There has to be sites that are closer to the loads ? What about Wales, plenty of options there ?

I was thinking that too - if all the PSH ends up in Scotland then it still ends up fighting against constrained transmission capacity?

In Wales at the moment is the well-known Dinorwig, and the smaller and less well-known Ffestiniog - but they're both also in NW Wales!

There is a scheme in Wales (also Snodonia) that has planning consent - Glyn Rhonwy (100MW/700MWh) - but no one seems to be talking about building it.

Yes, we do need a higher capacity grid (and more bootstraps) but I am still pleased that it will be abe to mop up surplus generation when the grid can't handle it either around Scotland or for transmitting South and then be able to release it when generation dwindles or the grid is under less pressure.
It's also very good for longer term storage...

There's Maentwrogg hydro station as well - fed from Llyn Trawsfynydd - its been around since the 50's but when Trawsfynydd nuclear power station was built their operation was constrained to maintain coolant water.

They could do a pumped storage where I live from Y Fron down to Dorothea at Talysarn too but no one ever seems to be interested.
