Congleton Hydro

A project driven by socially-aware (meaning climate-conscious) engineers.

Wow, never realised. Where I grew up. The number of weirs through from Havannah (used to be a cigar factory there
) through to Congleton itself, is five.
The Havannah one suits because of the existing structure the generator has been built in. The main weir (I used to swim and dive off it
) also, I think, had a secondary feed to a ? Water wheel - long gone. The ‘head’ on this one is probably the biggest of all the weirs.
There is still an existing water wheel two weirs down the river.
Siemens has had a big presence in the town since the mid-70’s - one of their factories is one weir down from the generator (about a mile), though, from my limited knowledge, would be less suitable for a generator.
The Dane is a fast flowing, rapidly rising river. Many textile mills grew up along the river.

But not if you bought the Stockport Hydro project,
The doors are open so I assume they got out.

It still annoys me that a local community hydro project that I got involved in, to put a run of the river hydro scheme in the Thames next to the weir at Teddington Lock, which got planning approval from the local council, but which was overturned on appeal at the High Court, with an appeal claim that was funded by The Lensbury Club. Which just happens to be funded by Shell.

It annoys me as would have put money in too... It looked a no-brainer. I just thought it was the country club but which stopped it, the ff industry link hadn't occurred to me.
Didn't a previous BP chairman get ousted for wanting to take the company to "Beyond Petroleum?"

The Lensbury was built as a private members club for Shell employees. Although it was turned into a hotel/conference centre more recently and also now a health club/sports club/leisure complex. But either way, it was them wot killed the project on the basis of noise pollution from the proposed hydro scheme. Which is ridiculous because when you're sitting in the grounds of The Lensbury there is a constant background roar from the weir, and the views aren't exactly of pristine natural riverfront either as a result! Argh.

A nice video here:
They say in the newsletter that brought the link that they have reached 50MWhr now. Not bad going as they only started up in Sept or October.

Using google maps I see that it’s on the river Dane in north east Congleton where the housing stops. I can feel a walk there coming along.
