The problem is that "the government" you refer to is staffed by politicians and civil servants who are very keen indeed on getting themselves a cushy job at one of the hedge funds that own Drax.
Given the delays to HPC and the closure of all but one Nuke station before HPC opens, I don't think we can ditch another 3GW of baseload quite so easily.

Oh absolutely - just wish it wasn't pretending to be environmentally "green" and in any way equivalent to wind or hydro.

I get the feeling if it were repowered as a natural gas power station it would actually be less harmful. At least it wouldn't be lying about what it is, or benefitting from green subsidy.

I’ve read that DRAX is worse than coal! And at least coal wouldn’t have the pretence of being “clean”!

This is the issue, the grid needs it.
