Late to this thread but dont tar all wood pellets with the same brush. Yes I totally agree Drax is a dinosaur that should never have got off the drawing board with electrical efficiency under 30% its just a total waste of a valuable renewable resource. Like any thermal power plant it only becomes efficient if you can utilise the waste heat generated. A typical CHP plant can be upto 90% efficient. This is normally split 30% electrical and 60% thermal using standard steam technology but will increase to 45% electrical 45% thermal using combustion engine technology.
Declaration of interest I do produce wood pellets using solar kilns for drying and PV for manufacture of pellets. The whole process can be totally renewable.

Dont do pictures. Have learnt the hard way that stuff sprouts legs and walks when you load pictures onto the internet. Even had 5 minutes of fame on a Hugh Fearnly programme only to suffer for the next 5 years with folk helping themselves.

If you want to look it up its an italian comafer k100 wood pellet machine. Its only a noddy machine producing 100kg per hour although it does run 24/7.

Near a 1/4 Tonne per day, that'll do! We burn about 8 kilo of mixed dried wood per day rising to 12kgs or so deep Winter.

but whats the feedstock for such a Mc ? And then there is chipboard and MDF demand. I get the impression that not much gets unused.
