I heard one brief passing comment about the fact that we ignore the environmental effects... the cloud was the result of venting unused kerosine* fuel into the cold of the upper atmosphere where it disperses into a cloud and freezes immediately.

I wonder why they dont just burn the engines at lower power for longer to have a slower return to the tower ? The final rapid deceleration they currently use must stress the fabric and components more than a slower longer deceleration ?

Then having said that which is the greater environmental impact - unburnt Kerosine in the upper atmosphere or combustion products in the lower atmosphere ?
