https://food-hacks.wonderhowto.com/how- ... t-0160956/
Lots of other pages with similar information but this one seemed a good read and had some nice ideas (fried bread option especially!) - suffice to say I wont be making fire lighters out of chicken fat any longer as its got higher value option that i wasnt aware of until prompted to look by AE.

I did know that the chicken fat in fast food outlets is used to flavour the gravy so theres another use if you like that sort of thing

Thanks for that Moxi, I have some ideas on what to do with it now. The results and suggestions produced by my earlier searches just didn't seem very promising.
I have given up trying to use it in gravy (even for the roast chicken) as it has always given an unpleasantly greasy result. Maybe I just used too much...

I also found this https://www.epicurious.com/ingredients/ ... tz-article and it looks a lot more promising!
I can't understand why I got nowhere before, maybe it's just that I was searching for "cook with chicken fat" or some equally basic mistake!

On the subject of recycling oil has any one used HVO?

A local fuel place offers it as a diesel replacement. All the oil is supposedly from recycling. Quite tempted to get some for the tractor but suspect there is an environmental catch they are not sharing

From the limited research I've done, there's a 90% saving on CO2 emissions vs diesel, and it has a good shelf life as it isn't biodiesel. The main downside is the cost, it also has a slightly lower energy density than diesel.

Edit - I just clicked on the link. That's a well written site for a supplier.

Any large quantity of fat from say a chicken is drained and mixed with saw dust, lint and cardboard to make home made fire lighters - but thats not very often that we have enough fat to do that.

Palm oil! urghh I used to eat a lot of biscuits but when I read about the damage the palm oil industry was doing to the environment and the dubious health issues that could be associated with palm oil I more or less cut them out, I have the occasional relapse but currently back on the "no biscuits wagon"

I found that almost all biscuits have palm oil in them so I have mostly weaned myself off them - and now eat plain Scottish oatcakes, which are very nice and slightly sweet too. The Nairn's cheese ones are even better! For an occasional treat I have (all) butter shortbread. No expense spared, you see!

I discovered that chicken fat was called (or just "is") schmaltz in Yiddish. Hence schmaltzy music etc. However I can't find a recipe using it, I would guess that it was put in cakes or biscuits from the connotation. I don't want to experiment in case I ruin a batch of something! (It might be that it was what you used when you had no alternative, even if the outcome did taste odd!)

Home made biscuits are easy, very tasty and obviously healthy ;) Most important thing, you have control over the ingredients - reducing sugar doesn’t affect overall taste/texture.

DW kept halving the sugar in baked goods down to a reasonable level.

Reduced the amount of refined sugar (also very bad) significantly - taste is still good, just if you have a ‘bought’ cake or biscuit, they taste so sweet.

Since about 50 years ago SWMBO has been making a big batch of sweet oat biscuits for all our camping and expedition holidays
https://bestrecipesuk.com/recipes/golden-oat-biscuits/ is about right (but halve the baking powder.) After a while our walking club friends who hadn't really taken enough food for themselves on walks started queueing up for their "Valerie biscuits" at each afternoon halt!

We found that if you substitute honey for the Golden Syrup and/or sugar they stay very soft, which wasn't ideal.
