I think this is part of Tesla's policy, so that fleet sales don't undermine secondhand values later on, as they can do when large fleets buy volumes at low prices, then those vehicles hammer the sh value when they get auctioned off 3yrs later.
And also the income to Telsa might not include sales taxes, I paid over £10k in VAT for mine, so they might even be long range versions or a mixture of the two.
Ello Nowty, apologies in advance for the pedantry that is to follow. In the US, because the sales tax (like VAT) varies from state to state, the prices quoted are usually before 'local and state taxes', so at a guess, I assume Tesla gets most of the referenced $42k minus any federal taxes (no idea if there are any, just trying to be thorough).

That's one of the reasons why US prices often seem much lower than the UK/Europe, where prices include taxes, and why we often see a $ to £ conversion. EG a $42k US price, after shipping, import taxes and VAT will be closer to £42k eg $42k, plus $1k shipping, then x 1.1 (10% import tax), then times 1.2 (20% VAT), then divide by 1.38 exchange rate = £41k. [China import rate into Europe on cars is 3% I think.]

Seems to have had an impact on the share price of some other full BEV manufacturers too - XPeng has gone up 11% today, Nio 5%

The US Hertz website now has pricing for the Tesla Model 3 rental. Look how similar in cost it is to other 4-door saloons?

Meanwhile, Musk confirms via Twitter that Hertz got zero discount for ordering 100,000 vehicles.

What Sandy Munro says about the order; much more than it seems at first sight. Skip first 2 minutes.

Given that I now have something like 14 different apps on my phone and about 8 RFID cards to hopefully enable our two BEVs to charge at whatever charge point we happen to roll up at (AKA desperately need to work) I'm wondering how that pans out if a non-BEV owner rents a BEV.

Granted Tesla have seemingly decent network coverage in at least most parts of the UK (I think - Zoe & MG owner) but what about if the car rented isn't a Tesla? Most charge points I use still aren't contactless.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. If I was a rental company why would I want to buy any other EV to rent out other than a Tesla where the renter just plugs it into a supercharger and the cost can be automatically recovered from the renter.

I've only used a Supercharger once, but the fact that you just plug it in, no card or anything required and the car even knows when it needs to stop charging to get to your destination. Its arguably even easier than filling with petrol or diesel.

If SWMBO goes to London in the BMW i3, its find a lampost charger which is not blocked by an ICE vehicle, get the charging cable out of the car, work out which end goes in which hole, then tries the APP, then phones me for help, then sends me a photo of the QR code so I can use my APP. So I have to display it on the iPad so I can scan it with my phone, the I have to ask if the light LED light on the lampost is orange or green. Its orange, eh, oh I haven't ticked the terms and conditions box, ok done that, is it green ?, yes, have you locked the car, i think so, oh the door opens, right its locked now. Is the light still green ?, what light is that ?, oh yeah its still green, I think.................................

I didn't expect that. For around +$25 per day, and hopefully some fuel savings, who wouldn't want the Tesla instead. I suspect a lot of people will choose them to dip their toes into the electric waters (that doesn't sound safe!) or just for long test drives if they are already considering getting a BEV/Tesla.

Sadly, only 50k of the cars are going as general rentals, the other 50k will be for Uber drivers to rent.
