Mini-e to get bigger battery pack

#1

Post by dan_b »

Updated Mini electric will increase battery pack from 32kW to either 40kWh or 54kWh - that's a decent capacity bump. Wonder what that'll do for actual range - the Mini-e isn't exactly blessed with high efficiency or long range

Hiya Dan, just to say I also thought the Mini was inefficient, but have to eat my words following a recent vid from What Car doing a winter range test. Slight twist on this one was that it was a more typical(ish) UK winter test at 3-6C. Obviously we can all pick different temps, especially those in Scotland, but I thought this was a good idea. EV_Database has excellent stats for real life driving, but their winter range estimates for the UK are based on -10C, which is pretty damn extreme.

Anyways, interestingly, to me, were the two most efficient cars, the Mini at 3.9m/kWh, and the Tesla TMY at 3.6m/kWh. So the Mini was about 10% more efficent than the TMY, which in turn was about 10% more efficient than the next group, at around 3.2m/kWh. If only the Mini cost a bit less, and had a larger battery, since it only managed 113 miles, with a battery size a half to a third of that of the others.

Vid may be a bit long and boring, though I enjoyed it, but you can just click on 9:30 min mark to see the results table. Note typo in the final chart for the Megane 18in, which should be 3.1 (not 2.1). Also the Mini seems to have understated its efficiency, the only one that did. Probably best not to mention the I-Pace.
