500Wh/Kg, 1400Wh/L, the Amprius Li battery
It appears to be ready for production and a prime candidate for aircraft use. Volumetric density is between 1300 and 1400Wh/L.

Re: 500Wh/Kg, 1400Wh/L, the Amprius Li battery
Silicon instead of graphite anode, can hold 7 times more lithium, roughly double the energy density on both weight and volume. But very expensive, he mentions 600 dollars per pound (half kilo ?).
I'm thinking the best alternative lithium battery similar to $200 per 5kg and 1kWh. So 1kWh of the new battery would be circa 2.5kg or $3000.
So 15 times the price ?, or have I got it completely wrong ?

This is a very interesting battery. BEV Ferraris will have them no-doubt. However we’re moving in the opposite direction with affordable LiFePO4 batteries increasingly used in BEVs despite poorer energy density than current NMC batteries.

Lilium must be very interested.

No idea if you're right or wrong, but thanks for the figures. The trade off for these higher efficiency batts is always cost, so their roles will vary, but perhaps this opens the door to longer distance air travel?nowty wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 9:34 pm Silicon instead of graphite anode, can hold 7 times more lithium, roughly double the energy density on both weight and volume. I may muck up his numbers, but I think Elon said in 2019 or 2020 that for 500 mile flights you need 400Wh/kg, and suggested perhaps in 5yrs time (economically). I believe he also said that a further 20% improvement, would allow for a doubling of range to 1,000 miles, given that the large amount of energy needed to reach altitude, remains the same.

Potentially very good news indeed, cannot wait to see some real world govt led (strong-arm) application applied to the phrase climate emergency &

As above really - this is extremely good news in being able to open up additional types of decarbonisation issues to electric power solutions - very heavy vehicles, very long distance loads - think marine power, aircraft, and the inexorable development of grid-scale longer-term storage etc... whilst in the meantime other battery chemistries (and manufacturing capaciticies) can be used to
