While some trucking is long-distance, quite a lot is local. Concrete is obviously local by definition. There is a lot to be said for "let's not worry about the impossible for now, just do the possible!

I get quite excited by stuff like these. If you think about it, when you get away from main roads, there are only three* types of heavy diesel that 'visit' urban and suburban streets - cement trucks, rubbish trucks and building material delivery trucks. You can hear them from a long way off, plus they all have power take off devices (cement discharge, rubbish compacting, and cranes for unloading), which require the engines to rev up.
Edit - Thought of another one, if the cement and buildings material truck are bringing stuff in, then we often need a skip truck to take things away. And once again, a noisy (engine revving) power take off device.
Not the end of the world, of course, but removing the air and noise pollution from streets, and I suppose work sites, especially ones with noise restriction rules, can only be a good thing. Lot's of slow speed driving, with start/stops and engine idling, which presumably makes them less efficient than motorway cruising trucks.
Just a thought, as the world gets a little nicer each day.
