Good grief, this is a sad reflection on modern times. Volvo to now only sell SUVs in the UK.

This is very sad indeed! We're seeing choice disappearing before our eyes.
American consumers stopped buying estates (wagons) and MPVs (minivans) a decade ago, they never bought hatchbacks in any number. Americans now pretty much only buy crossovers (and pickups). Unfortionatly we are following them. Saloons, Estates, hatchbacks simply aren't selling. Ford nolonger sell the Mondeo or the Fiesta they have a load of different crossovers though.
I'm a big fan of the family estate. It is simply the correct tool for the job of family car. You can go to B&Q or the garden centre, you can take the family camping, it just does the job of shifting people and stuff. However it seems that I'm the only one.

I can honestly say that watching (before intervening) a mother in a BIG TALL SUV with kids in the back, trying to reach let alone tie down a bike that had been for repair at halfords was a laugh, presumably the seats were "too hard" to fold down, loosen / remove a front wheel etc, instead she wanted to dump it on the roof & tie it down with whatever crap she had to hand (not much, no protection, no sense) ..that sucker was going to shift & scratch regardless.
A reasonable size estate could have dealt with things a lot better... as would leaving kids home whilst you picked up the bike

I'm not mourning the loss of saloons - Neither use nor ornament

Agree, my father always had them and unfortunately I ended up with two of his cast off's for my first two cars.
