Based on data released by the SMMT, this graph of total EV sales in 2021 to date in the UK is quite something. Some of these numbers are very surprising/amusing/shocking.

Why? Seem acceptable to me.

We have to accept that some manufacturers are delivering virtually identical vehicles under different trade names. One definitely doesn’t.

Ok - didn't realise Toyota even had a full BEV in the UK market, but somehow they've sold 5?
The lame Lexus BEV has got the desultory sales it deserves (389)
But how have Mazda managed to shift 1300 of their compliance car, but Honda have only sold 500 of the Honda-e?
I thought there would have been more Polestar sales relatively speaking.
VW has done well.
Tesla is eating everyone's lunch.

I would have thought Volvo would have sold more of their (mass market) XC40 BEV than the (niche) Polestar 2?

Considering I've had to wait many months for my iD4 to be delivered I guess VW is constrained by their ability to manufacture BEVs rather than a lack of demand. Audi too are now taking orders for the mass market Q4 e-tron so will no-doubt soon start selling a lot more (if they can make them in sufficient numbers!).

I remember reading that Porsche have been surprised by demand levels for their Taycan, they've sold a lot more than they forecast.

Could those Toyota/Lexus sales be PHEV's/HEV's not BEV's as the graph says 'EV's'? But then, Shirley the Toyota PHEV sales would be much higher than 5 ........ HFCV's?

I tried looking up numbers on the SMMT site, and found it fun that the 'by brand' listing still doesn't have Tesla, but there are a lot of 'other imports'.

VWG have had another crisis meeting to address their BEV production v's the Chinese and Tesla, so they are taking it quite seriously. Also I assume they are a bit jumpy about the Berlin plant coming on line soon, because if Tesla Shanghai is building cars in 1/3rd the time of VW with one 'single casting', then Berlin may be even faster if the rumours are true that they'll be using two castings, one at each end.

Yeah, the factoid that Tesla takes just 10 hours to build a Model 3 in its China plant, whereas it takes VW more than 3x as long to build an iD4 at their newly re-vamped Zwickau plant, and Tesla is about to open the Berlin factory, has definitely has got VAG worried.

The lame Lexus BEV has got the desultory sales it deserves (389). Nothing unusual, shocking, etc there
But how have Mazda managed to shift 1300 of their compliance car, but Honda have only sold 500 of the Honda-e? No comment on that

VW has done well. Only the main name in the group of companies. I would expect them to sell rather more than Skoda, per eg
Tesla is eating everyone's lunch. Only by virtue of being at the top anyway (no real surprise, that) and not having several off-shoots making similar models - like the peugeot e-208/vauxhall e-corsa, etc - or the twin companies of Hyundai and Kia

From my point of view, its disappointing the total/month is still only around the 30k mark, so likely still less than 10%. But going in the right/expected direction, all the same.

Article here from Cleantechnica on UK car sales for Sept. We hit 15.2% BEV sales, lifting the 2021 figure (so far) to 9.5%, so hopefully the year will end on 10%+. This also seems to show that like other European countries, we are following a 1 2 4 8 doubling growth, rather than a slow linear 1 2 3 4 growth. I know a lot of companies are talking up chip shortages and Covid, and the economy, but I'm getting a strong feeling that consumers are starting to put off ICEV purchases as the Osborbne Effect kicks in, and they begin to want a better car (BEV), and fear for the potential losses (depreciation) of buying an ICEV.

2022 should be a stand out year in Europe, simply from looking at the BEV growth this year in the larger markets like France, Germany and the UK.

UK Plugin EV Share Above 20% In September, Tesla Model 3 Overall Bestseller
September’s combined plugin result of 21.6% comprised 15.2% full battery electrics (BEVs) and 6.4% plugin hybrids (PHEVs), a continued reweighting towards BEVs that has been ongoing this year. PHEVs – no longer receiving any incentives in the UK – have been stable at 6% to 7% share for most of 2021. The cumulative plugin share for 2021 now stands at 16.1%, up from 8.8% at this point in 2020.

looks like Austin's 'practice production' is using two mega castings already.

Tesla has started building Model Y bodies with two giant single casting pieces for the front and back of the electric SUV.
