That is fundamentally correct. To start with (after it had run dry( distracted by the grand children)), I followed the instructions. Bled air from the filter, and from the top of the injector pump, on the inlet side, I believe. cranked a while, with no luck. I then cracked the connection to the injector, and fuel came out. No joy. With the help of a mechanic, removed the injector, turned it upside down so that we could check for mist from the nozzle. No luck. He took the injector away and cleaned it up. No luck. jumped on the ferry and took it to Asher, injector specialist. A couple of days later. they phoned and said that the injector fine. I removed the injector pump and took it over. He checked it out and said was fine. He showed me with it in his hand with the top off, pushing the piston up with a screw driver with fuel at first trickling out and then suddenly with more force. He explained that it can be hard to remove an air lock and said he often has to prime the pump. Hence fitting the squeezy bulb, as he suggested, and pumping fuel through under pressure. for sure the fuel lever is open, but strangely enough, I was trying the fuel lever in the three positions, start, run and stop, and when in the stop position, while squeezing the bulb, more fuel flowed out than in the other positions. I guess this is how it stops the engine, not by cutting off the fuel supply, but I guess dropping the pressure. Obviously I have a lot to learn here.
I will take some more pictures tomorrow. Below is a picture of an identical engine, showing the fuel lever. Thank you for your interest!
Mike.

That makes sense - but it probably follows then that you will not get enough pressure to open the jnjector if the lever is in any position that allows the squeezy bulb to send fuel to the injector pipe.

I'm not sure what the difference is between start and run positions, unless start is just full throttle for max fuelling: it should produce a mist at the injector in either position.

Some pics might help (your last pic won't show for me).

Thanks, yes, I've looked at these pics before. I don't think I dare take the pump apart, it will never go back correctly! I will give it one more go tomorrow and take a few pics.

I've had another go,....
Something is not right. When I squeeze the bulb, fuel gushes through with the injector disconnected. Hook it up upside down so that it stays decompressed and I can check for mist, and nothing, whether I squeeze or not. Stop squeezing and just a dribble. It looks as if the fuel dribbles out and then it drops back in down the pipe gain. on the next stroke a bubble of air and and another dribble. Squeeze on the bulb, and a good gush. if I then slacken off the bleed on the injector pump, some air comes out. Did this 20 times or so and no change. How can air enter the fuel when it's gravity fed and the pipe full of fuel, plus pressured by the bulb? Very strange.
Photos show injector pump and injector inverted.

There should be a valve ("delivery" valve - non-return i would suppose) in the outlet of the injection pump (items 15, or 16 to 21 in flintray's diagram).

From your description it could be stuck open, as the fuel and air should not suck back into the pump once they come through that valve into the injector pipe.

In theory, that wouldn't stop it working as long as no air was in the system, but would make it nigh impossible to bleed air out once it's gotten in.

Thanks Marcus, thinking the same. I'll hop back on the ferry this week and take the pump, injector and connecting pipe over to Asher and hope they can sort it...

As the specialist said both the injector and injector pump are working as they should I would follow exactly the last bleed sequence I posted and failing that working go to page 40 in the workshop manual and follow the pump timing section.
