I'm one for the polartec aleutian smock fleece, which now I come to think of it is a bit "Tom"

It's a versatile fabric that has potentially a very long lifespan if you buy a half decent one (even second hand on ebay) there are some lovely original Malden mills pattern fleece out there (Herringbone etc) actually pretty fashionable where winterwear is involved.
