My thoughts too OGB.

Oh yeah, we forgot in all the excitement..
Presumably EV are smart for the same govt / grid controllability, ..got around by temporarily removing the sim card to draw power.
As home ev chargers are typically 7kWh will this mean granny plugs "slow & steady" will be deemed better than, (stable smaller draw) or just as bad as its more energy heavy brethren?

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
Our EV isn't very smart. It cannot connect to WiFi (doesn't have that capability) and as there's no mobile signal here the app is a complete waste of time as it just doesn't work (well it does, but can never connect to the car).Mr Gus wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 3:08 pm Oh yeah, we forgot in all the excitement..

EV chargers installed after 01 July 2020 have to be smart. I assume with a view to forcing scheduling in future.Oldgreybeard wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 3:29 pmOur EV isn't very smart. You can still buy dumb chargers, so crack on and fit one.
Mine is as dumb as a box of rocks, it achieves the function it was designed for- charging the car.

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
In theory its the marketing & peoples expectations of "app-ed up everything" & over the air updates that makes for " smart" *cough* ..assuming perfect internet signal & little down time, thus removing the sim card just makes for "dumb" again.
I doubt a lock out if you don't comply is built in, & if it were there would likely have to be consult !? ...oh wait smart meters unauthorised changes
Realistically folk should have a secondary means of update (if designers give a damn) unless they really want to send engineers out, so presumably these days thats by a local area network via house wi-fi no physical plug ins !?
OGB, which charger do you possess? ..we have shonky internet signal here, so it is of interest to myself.
So how do you register for a "pass" !? ..or is that the next mess, whereby you have to provide proof that you are a-la covid an essential worker, because in terms of data scraping "prove who you are" (as per police enquiries) thats a step down the road too far.
((or you can take the sim card out))
How accessible is the sim, always a question that makes em think "blimey" when in conversation with charger sales / technical.

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
I only charge my daughter's car with the "granny" charger because the 2.4kW discharge better meets with my PV and battery output when it is sunny enough for me to afford it.
I would like to acquire a charger cable with a 16A blue plug as the modern 3 pin plug gets worryingly hot.

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
Granny really isn’t recommended. Most proper charge points can be “turned down”. I use mine on 6A (1.4kW) to harvest solar when the sun is shining.openspaceman wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 9:49 pmI only charge my daughter's car with the "granny" charger because the 2.4kW discharge better meets with my PV and battery output when it is sunny enough for me to afford it.

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
Point taken Stinsy but for the few times I get to charge an EV the investment isn't worth it to me.

Re: Smart meters being remotely turned off
It's a dumb Qubev charger, very useful with PV, as it has a switch on the side to change the charge current with 4 settings from 6A to 32A. I modified it slightly to add a time switch, very easy to do as it has an internal connection on its controller to enable/disable charging. By default its always under time switch control, so comes on just after the start of the E7 off-peak rate time and off just before the end of the off-peak time. The time switch has an override button, so for PV charging I can turn the current down and press the override to charge at a rate that the PV can keep up with.
