Failing that would it be possible to consider something like making it a ZIM file and those who want to self host/make available on self hosted hardware can?

Have a look a Kiwix as the project ..... There are lots of forums and knowledgebases that people can selfhost to make sure the information is not lost. I mean you can even selfhost Wikipedia if you wanted to

As far as I can work out, anyone would be able to do that - you wouldn't need any admin or member permissions. But then it would only be available to them unless hosted somewhere. But if it was hosted, I'm not sure any traffic would be sufficient to keep it relatively visible in Google searches, which means it would only be of use to people who knew the info was there... in which case they could scrape it themselves.

I'm also unsure about free hosting - we were always totally against any hosting that would involve adverts appearing on the site, and it's probably wrong to go down that route now.

Does that make sense, or have I misunderstood? Be gentle with me, it's been a long day!

In terms of creating a ZIM file, I just thought that it would be good manners to ask the current site owner/moderators before scraping and also if you created the ZIM file it will stop lots of people (maybe) scraping it for themselves.

With respect to the free hosting - I would agree with you - adverts are a PITA and should be avoided if at all possible. That said people that self host might have an available public facing webserver and the cost may well be minimal to zero (but it would be down to said person to make sure they maintained the server - so there is an overhead even if it is not money).

I just thought they might be options to provide a means to back up the knowledge on the site for future use.

Ah, I see - thank you. I might mention to people on GLF that they can scrape it themselves if they like. I'm wondering about creating a copy for myself just in case it's ever useful, but will probably just let it go.

Hubby has looked at creating a readable ZIM file. He decided that it was doable, but a bit more involved than he wanted to do.

However, if anyone would like to do this and has the know-how, please feel free. The only restriction is that normal 'fair use' copyright rules apply, anything quoted from it should be fully attributed, and it shouldn't be made available online without my express permission.

It's ironic that the GLF closes down because of the huge amount of legislation and potential penalties for non-compliance. And yet big organisations like Facebook continuously provide advertising space to companies selling snake oil, with free abandon and seemingly no consequences. The best option is to be massively financially successful and influential, then the rules and regulations don't seem to apply.

It would be great if the GLF archives could be combined with Camelot, but if storage is an issue, I should have spare server space that could be used, rather than let it burn. No idea how it would be done though - I've very little technical expertise in that area.
