Just had a visit from a Parish Councillor. It seems they've had a complaint as well. Chap took one look at the lane and commented that it was cleaner than it had been in years. I got the feeling that the complainant was known to him. I strongly suspect she has been a serial complainer to them, although the councillor didn't actually mention that.

I'm predicting that Monday may cause an upset as well. The guys are working on Monday (they need the money), despite it being a public holiday. Given that there are two or three houses in the village with flag poles, with Union flags currently at half-mast, I can foresee that we'll have complaints regarding working during the funeral.

The world does not stop, assuming these lads have families? There's the answer then and Beth would agree.

Not everyone has bought into the force fed BS & faux deference of the media circus & govt telling us all his we should feel, their problem if they have, say it with an implement in your hand, ..reminds me of the weeping fool who wailed "my Diana" outside buck house way back.

It's an "imposed" bank holiday not compulsory, so do what you need to do & remind them they are being somewhat emotionally naive & a bit dense & that you object to tax avoiders & kiddie fiddlers then walk away.

My view is that as these lads are self-employed, so will lose a day's pay if they don't work, then it's unreasonable for anyone to expect them to lose so much money. Might be different for employees of a company on a salary, that get paid for days off, but having been chatting to one of the lads, who's paying £187/month for electricity at the moment, it seems to me that losing out on more than his monthly electricity bill, just to satisfy the sensitivities of a small minority, is wholly unreasonable. Might put a sign out the front declaring our land as a republic if anyone tries it on.

Unfortunately, I’ve met so many people during my professional and personal life where, for them, being negative is the easy option.

To the point, that then becomes their default mode - serial complainants/vexatious individuals is their ultimate way of life.

Thankfully, I’m in a position that I can now, on the whole, avoid ‘negative’ people. The ones I do encounter, I accept their view and hopefully move on. Some continue with their position - I remain civil and laugh at them.

I do believe most people that end up like OGB’s example do need a degree of compassion and support as they have some deficiency in their life or personality. Most, though, would be beyond help.

Mine anyway

All day today we've had a pump running in a dug out sump in the foundation trench. It seems that we've struck a spring that's flowing a good few tens of litres a minute, and that was filling the whole foundation trench up within about ten minutes. Helped to clean the lane, though, as the pump's been discharging water over it all day, washing off the mud. I have wondered where that water had been flowing before we dug the trench. The soil is pretty claggy clay, and I've never noticed any water around the base of the fence that used to be there. Got me thinking about trying to find the source of the spring water on the hill behind us, to see if we could tap into it somehow. Not enough for even a micro hydro system, but it would be good to get some free water to top up the pond and maybe add another water feature to the garden.

I will turn my back on a negative person, if they don't take the hint I will verbally reset their buttons. Obviously there is a scale of progression.... Over 50, simply have no time for it.

Dowsing definitely works (for me anyway.) I used it - bent coat-hanger wires - to find an old salt-glazed foul drain when we had no idea where it was.

re the spring that was previously unsuspected, maybe the bedrock was sealed by the clay and digging has let it out? Now it's running I imagine it would be bloody difficult to stop it by puddling clay back over it! So...

A friend has an ancient spring in a deep recess in his sloping garden (used to be the village water source) which eventually feeds into a small stream...it never actually dries out so in hot dry weather he puts a small portable paddling pool under the outlet and a submersible pump to feed his garden-watering tanks. Lucky bugger! It may be that if you built a waterproof wall around yours the level would just rise up to the water table height and stop rising, giving you something to dip into or pump from, but not needing a permanent drain - wihich would deplete the water table unnecessarily anyway.
