What could we do with 4 Billion quid ? (R/E) sum total of PPE being burnt
What could we do with 4 Billion quid ? (R/E) sum total of PPE being burnt
The DHSC has so much unneeded PPE that it has appointed two commercial waste firms to help it dispose of 15,000 pallets a month “via a combination of recycling and burning to generate power”.
..but it's alright lads, we're burning it to make power (more like stay in power)
Corruption & outsourcing to "mates" ...FFS

( 1140 ripple wind turbines at £3.5 milion if we factor in the Kirk hill spec turbine E-92 enercon 2.35MW)
Time for some nowty math as to how many hard up folk could have a winter energy allowance via renewables. (or council pools heated)

Re: What could we do with 4 Billion quid ? (R/E) sum total of PPE being burnt
NB fag packet math for those 15000 pallets per month.
if they are standard pallets on a 40 foot lorry that is 2 abreast, 10 rows of 2 = 20 pallets per lorry.
Thus depending on movement from warehouse to incineration cough "recycling for power facility" that's 750 one way trips of full loads per month till done.
750 singular FULL / 1500 round trips with 40 footer lorries on the road.
The average ‘miles per gallon’ of an artic weighing over 33t was 7.6mpg. In 2015, that fuel consumption figure jumped to 7.9mpg, an incremental increase of 0.3mpg. And, for those of you whose brain’s work in litres/100km, that means that a modern lorry consumes 29.774 litres of fuel per 100km. For those of you who are interested
likely transported from Larkhall to https://levenseat.co.uk/energy-from-waste/
https://ukwin.org.uk/incinerators/?filt ... sting=show
If anyone knows the distance to the contracted incinerator from the Larkhall (Lanarkshire) ? facility then we can play fag packet math a bit more, ..& if anyone wants to hazard a guess as to calorific energy value of a standard pallet burnt at high heat let alone a pallet of duff ppe (mixed)..well
Another opportunity is to spec the warehouse storage for a months worth of pallets to keep things on the 15000 per month order..
(if you ever played one of the "tycoon" simulator games this may be for you)
https://www.warehouseiq.com/calculators ... alculator/
Costings for loading / unloading a 40 footer palletised is around the £175 -£200 these days "apparantly"
So at lower end commercial rates 750 loadings of lorries @£175 = £131,250 /£262,500 for 750 load & unload cycles ..per month
Food for thought as to "pissing your money away"
4 billion quidsworth of PPE ..without associated costs. (Of which we don't know how much the burning is charged at, or whether unloading is included ..well it is a goldmine from the public purse!

Why would the pallets only be stacked one high?

Re: What could we do with 4 Billion quid ? (R/E) sum total of PPE being burnt
govt contract
( if the public is going to be burnt for costs, & the product is to be burnt too, then why not the transport burn us on haulage too)
Like the russian military ..everyone gets a slice bar the soldiers using the kit. ..you saw that $75000 russian drone right?
Nice one Paul, spilt beer on my fag packet obviously
Ok, craig david stylee "re-wind" ..But that said different PPE different stacking standards(it's still got to be a safe load & removed at the other end, so we cannot be too complacent

Re: What could we do with 4 Billion quid ? (R/E) sum total of PPE being burnt
What is really galling (other terms are available) is that all this was so avoidable.
DofH/NHS did a major planning exercise in 2016 (Operation Cygnus) that highlighted major deficiencies in our preparedness for a Pandemic caused by a respiratory virus (emergent strain of flu in this case). This highlighted so many of the problems that were encountered at the beginning of the pandemic.
Even when I was working, we did major local planning exercises to plan for a major Swine/Avian Flu outbreak - again, many of the issues were common.
One of the major critics of HMG’s response was one Jeremy *unt - he was actually Health Minister during Operation Cygnus.
But this is the thin end of our problem with our form of Government; similar failings are apparent in our infrastructure, energy policies, health, policing, armed forces etc, etc.
And as for really grasping how we prepare ourselves as a low carbon economy
How do we sort this - we just lurch from one disastrous government to the next.

Yep, that’s the Cunning Stunt.
When I was a little more naïve, I used to think that politicians had to be bastions of probity, blessed with absolute integrity and sacrificing their individual needs to a career of service to the country.
Ho hum

The plan is to run the NHS and other public services into the ground then set the daily Heil etc on them for a bit then claim it would all be better in private hands...............kerching

But, regardless of what you may think, the NHS is a remarkably efficient, cost effective and outcome effective organisation.
It performs well compared to other similar European health care systems.
Private healthcare (US model) is incredibly expensive, not free at the point of need and excludes so many (Black) of the population.
I think it’s time that we probably adopted a German/French type model, where the ‘service’ is funded through taxation with additional top up from an individuals private health insurance.
Outcomes in the pandemic would have been different if there were adequate numbers of acute beds, adequate staffing in the acute sector plus a joiner approach between acute care and social care.
Privatisation cannot square the circle of an improved service for less money - if for nothing else, there’s got to be a profit/shareholder return in there somewhere.

I agree. The NHS is treated like a religion that cannot be questioned. And the (bonkers) US system is often presented as the only alternative.Bugtownboy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 10, 2022 12:07 pm But, regardless of what you may think, the NHS is a remarkably efficient, cost effective and outcome effective organisation.

We need to modernise the NHS and the German/French private, insurance-based systems should be considered. As should NHS-funded private provision of services.
It has come to something when the NHS is funding expedited private treatments for its own staff while the rest of us stagnate on waiting lists.
