Why are we being treated to so much Tory leadership race coverage by BBC corp?

Why are we being treated to so much Tory leadership race coverage by BBC corp?

There are only around 150,000 eligible for party voters

In December 2019, there were 47,074,800 Parliamentary electoral registrations and 49,153,700 local government electoral registrations.
Yet so much born blowing as if we were all voting which clearly we are not!

Hardly public interest when the voting is so heavily restricted. (surely) ?

I suppose it is in the public interest, even though the vast majority have no influence on the selection.

Does highlight what we’re going to end up with as our ‘leader’.

Wouldn’t trust either of them to lead a scout group, never mind the country. What gets me, they were both involved at the sharp end of running the country over the last few years. A time when our international standing has fallen, living standards deteriorated, public services decimated and a great chunk of standards and rights either ditched or in danger of being ditched.

Doesn’t fill me with any great hope.

1) They give as much coverage to the Labour Party leadership contests.

2) The election is for our next Prime Minister.

3) They’re trying very hard to avoid reporting about the Dutch farmer protests, the Taiwan situation is similarly unreported, people are bored of Ukraine, COVID is over. They’ve got to fill the airtime with something.

I agree, the media are dominated by an election in which only about 0.22% of the population are entitled to vote. The vast majority of the UK population have absolutely no say in the choice of the PM. Whether that's right or not I'm not sure. Since we seem to have elevated the position of PM to being akin to that of a president in recent years (i.e. they think they are above the law in many respects) then perhaps it is time the process was made more democratic.

1) Not having watched regular tv in a decade+ I cannot confirm the reality of any tv political parity, (esp as it's seats are Tory filled these days) nor especially can I remember such a stream of politics for someone that all but a gnats whisker are voting for but we all pay for via our enforced tv licensing scenario getting so much airtime across BBC tendrils.

2) Not our prime minister if no general election has taken place, merely a fill in, (another a-hole, another day) ..if the leader go's we ought have a vote of all parties & their deplorables ..just the choice of those few, whilst we get "general election type coverage" ..just not the political door knockers.

3) Those things are briefly reported on the world service, some on R4, the others media forms / channels I cannot compare.

I did hear briefly (R4) "Labour" party politicians are not allowed on picket lines under current leadership, ...wth?

Keith really is trying to clear out the "old left"! I don't know how he can do that when: his party is borderline bankrupt and what money they do have comes from the unions. On the other hand, I'm just glad to see him do something, anything!

It would be so good, if we’re going to continue with our current political system, to have at least one viable opposition party. Two, even if the second were a coalition of minorities, would be fantastic.

At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be anything that truly holds HMG to account - Keir tries, but he’s not the most charismatic and I’m sure is always watching his back or thinking what the unions are going to do.

We can’t continue with this, can we ? A political party bankrolled by billionaires, not all British, and supported by our media moguls - again, not all British.

Quite depressing really.

I agree that we are utterly deprived of anything resembling a functioning opposition.

Surely the Labour vacuum could have left room for the Lib Dems / Greens to march in, but they've been utterly absent too. I frankly don't understand it.
