Am I tired ? We were just going over last months bills for us and the parents in law next door and we pay 45 pence standing charge while they are being charged 47 pence ?

I thought the standing charge was the same for everyone in a specified region ?

Can anyone enlighten me further please ?

The standing charge varies from one supplier to another, and between one tariff and another, I believe. Unless you're both with the same supplier, on the same tariff, then there's a fair chance that the standing charge will differ.

Each region has a maximum for its standard tariff but the supplier can charge less.

Mum and Dad are with Shell and we were placed with EON next when igloo went bust, I hadn't realised that the rate varied from tariff to tariff and supplier, I just thought we all paid the regional quoted figure.

Thanks for the feedback, we will be looking to move mum and dad from shell if practicable as they are charging more for standing charge and tariff and their customer service is dire from experience!

Appreciate your assistance.

I’d be tempted to buy a length of 10mm² and avoid the standing charge on one property completely!

Thats an option for when they are no longer with us and the lads take up residence next door!, if i tried that now the MiL would get in a state about it all.

Dont get me wrong she loves the 2.7kW array and the 7kwh battery that we had installed for them and since April they have enjoyed extremely low power consumption from the grid, but trying to get her to change some of her habits to maximise time of day generation etc has proven a mite futile.

6am hoover the whole house (daily) and washing machine done by 8am with clothes hung out (every other day)

we've looked at changing her supplier today but no one is taking people on it seems - they are all battened down ripping off as much money as they can get from the current customer base.

I do keep dropping the hint that another two or three panels (1kWp?) on the porch roof would get her some extra weeks off the grid supply a the start and end of the year so that might be a possibility in the near future once the solar PV market starts to subside a little again.
