killa wot ours!

Post by tony »

I get all wound up with us not using proper nomenclature for units

most recently we see power usage expressed as kwh, KwH, KWH etc

It should be kWh --- small k for thousand (kilo) =, capital W for Watts and h for hours kWh always please

there are plenty of other things too you may notice that centimetres do not figure in my vocabulary -- these are not SI units metres or millimetres are though.

(Slightly edited copy of my plea from GBF 2010)

I second that, it grinds my gears to hear people talking about kilowatts per hour, or how many kilowatts do you use a day :head-bang:

Must admit though I am less fussed about only using SI units, some are impractically small for everyday use, I get kitchen plans in millimetres which seems nuts.
Since I had a couple of Polish guys working for us I have used centimetres which are a lot more human scaled for the kind of stuff we do. Also my old mince pies struggle with millimetres on the tape now :D as for pascals, well you need millions of the blighters just to blow up a balloon :oO:

I regret that your post, to me at least, is pot calling kettle black.

Whilst I agree that the wrong use of capitals in KWH, kwh etc is regrettable, I think that we can all understand the meaning of what is written. We also accept that many posts are made from small keyboards on smart phones and hence we do not get too upset about what is winding you up.

However, what is unforgiveable is the confusion between power and energy, the latter being power * time.
kWh is a measure of energy not of power. Thus when you post

"most recently we see power usage expressed as kwh, KwH, KWH etc
It should be kWh

You have it wrong. It should not, it should be kW

For example, the standard power of my solar panels is 2.1kWp. My annual energy produced is usually in the range 1,800-2,000 kWhs.

Some newbies get it wrong and some of us veterans get it wrong cos we type too fast or are half cut. But most of the time its obvious what the person means so I don’t get too upset. I'm mellowing as I age. ;)
