Its a tad blowy
Its a tad blowy
Well down here on the north cornwall coast its a little more blowy than usual. Had to give up the morning dog walk as we physically couldnt move forwards i to the wind, and the dog seem to be enjoying himself too much.
Nice big panels are flexing and bowing in the high winds, the brackets and rails are still holding them onto the roof, not pleasent to see those sheets of glass doing that so have decided not to look anymore. I did contemplate having a third rail added for them when they were put up and wish i had now. Generating nicely though, which makes a change of late.
Some absolutely monster big tall waves as far as the eye can see, biggest ive seen since living down these parts, but surprisingly little damage nearby. MrsResy has lost a piece of polycarb from her greenhouse roof, now replaced with a bit of 4mm ply. The next door neighbour has faired worse and lost two roof tiles and has also kindly donated my garden two full lengths of cement cladding board from his newly installed dormer window, ow smashed on my lawn.
Neighbour the other side not happy his yesterday installed dovecoat a top a 3" wooden post has been destroyed after the post snapped, and he now owns half a dozen wheely bins that have travelled down the cul de sac to visit him and spew there contents all over his drive.
Apparantly in the town a partly constructed 4 storey block of flats under construction is at risk of the scaffolding coming down, Police and Fire brigade monitoring that, so off for a look after a nice cuppa.
Hope all you guys are fairing well? Am thinking of Moxi's new bin store roof and its life expectancy chances - supposed to be properly windy up there.

Re: Its a tad blowy
Hi Resy,
Bin store, bins and panel are all intact after an epic 12 hour rinse in 60 and 70 mph gusts, still the same conditions until around 1 am apparently. Our garden bench with storage is no longer viable having been blown ten ft into the garden wall where it’s a bit twisted and buckled- it was my late mums and already a museum pice when we got it but still sad to see it go. Otherwise damage has been quite limited as far we can tell, only be out for five minutes today for a quick check before diving back in the cottage for cover. I reckon 5 or 6 slates have broken free as we can hear their neighbours clapping on the roof in the more boisterous gusts - I’m hoping that I can staple them back on Monday with leat staples or if they are all together I might pull the rows to the soakers to reset them all and just staple the last slate for a bit better fix. I want to reroof the cottage at some point as it’s bent all ways and none of the tiles sit flush and tight. At that point I will probably opt for in roof panels.
Other than that the chicken run looks to have lost a post so a bit of work there too.
All in all we got off very lightly- not heard of anyone having anything serious happen.
Hope everyone else is fairing well

Re: Its a tad blowy
Been an interesting day all in here: was lying in bed at 2 am and thought there was a flash - opened my eyes and there was another flash, a long flash and another flash; seemed to be from somewhere to the west. This morning I was starting on the first downed tree on the road when the neighbour from the far end of the road turned up in his van to see me. Turns out the power in the whole area has been off since 2am [ cue smug mode - I hadn't noticed ]
He'd brought his chainsaw and with two of us sawing it was a lot faster getting the road cleared.
Although, it was a bit stressful as the wind gusts were still 70mph+ all day, and another big tree fell across the road whilst we were working and another three went down off the road . All dead ash trees with good ivy growth.
On the plus side: we took home two full transit loads of ash firewood each, and there's still more on the hedge banks still to be cleared.
Otherwise seem to have gotten off lightly: no structural damage except the stock fence where the fallen ash is still lying, one goat willow in the veg garden, and one of the Leylandi on the yard seems to be leaning ominously.
Mind you, I haven't had a chance to check the whole place yet

Re: Its a tad blowy
I thought we'd escaped the excitement on Friday but was woken up last night to a loud crash around 3am!
It seems the block of 8 x 50W panels all bolted together and strapped down in the middle decided to auto fold themselves..

Re: Its a tad blowy
Are the panels ok or has some of the glass shattered? Very sorry to hear about the damage.
Hoping it’s mostly salvageable.

Re: Its a tad blowy
It's still a bit wet and slippery to properly assess, but the frames and aluminium angle don't look so happy:
This small 800W array was the first load of panels I got from the old forum for £8ea I think? I now have three other arrays of 500w JA panels, so maybe it's time to upgrade anyway I was hoping to wait until I made a new roof for them to mount on properly first though, so it may have to wait.

That's a bummer Al, good that the CCTV captured the event though and like you said perhaps time for an upgrade!

That was a neat folding trick.Incredible it didn't rip, tear, and fly off sideways.

Yeah, I'm glad they didn't take out the wheelhouse with them! With sound on it's quite a crash!
I was trying to justify buying the perfect sized panels to fit the roof before, but then thought it's a shame to not use these. Now I'll definitely need nice shiny new panels..
