Just bought myself a wee Flir TG130 handheld thermal imaging camera. No bells and whistle, just a small screen, freeze screen button and a temp reading. Love it! :D
Ebay £99. Low embedded energy cost as its used and its also running on rechargeable AAA's. I must apologise ahead of the game for the upcoming flood of 'fascinating' Thermal images on the site! :)

Keen to see how you get on with it. The one's I've been looking at are in the £400 price range.

I'd want to scan the upstairs ceiling to look for cold spots that indicate insufficient insulation / thermal bridging above. Stand outside looking for heat leaks.

The critical bit is resolution of the device, I want to see a degree or two difference clearly indicated on the device...

The older gen hand held is the affordable (mostly) way to go, the Android / iPhone clip on flirs are "disposable" product by door that they do not wish to maintain (internal battery is irreplaceable) ..which I object to, sadly their phone staff were to customer service what a dose of the clap is to a seemingly happily married couple..

Nice kit joe.

Cheers Gus, there are a lot of stories on the net of the Flir phone plug ins failing. Whether this is true i don't know but that combined with the fragility of the phone/unit connection and TBH price put me off. I didn't know this wee device was out there until it popped up via ebay in the 'helpful' lower bar. The rez is better than is coming across in the photos i am showing.

Just for scale beside a 'standard' IRT.

Flir "fettling" for those units was clear from the outset, (likely why they were so defensive & tight lipped when questioned by myself) but .."iphones" mentality won through, I hope someone was fired.

It brought down the brand imho. (clearly, not as if they G.A.F) ..anyone in a service dept could see that one incoming.

I bought an E5 a few years ago and it's been brilliant. It was on offer with a cavity wall inspection camera and was too good to miss. I sold the inspection camera on ebay as soon as it arrived.

Initially it was to check the house for further installation of insulation but as we are now pulling it down and building a new one it's not needed for that. It's great for scanning over the batteries and all the other wiring to check for any potential hot spots.

Taken with 7Kw going into the batteries.
