Hugh Piggott in the news
Re: Hugh Piggott in the news
Yes OGB, however so many small scale wind turbines in a close proximity, = data mashers delight, minimises the variables, IF it were to be approached & logged in such a manner, may go some way to small w/t deployment in years to come, also may be able to set a precedent for a plug & play system with less hoop jumping & cowboy industry fitters & less grid dependency, ..but hey.

Sadly Mr Gus theres no money in it for the big boys so Hugh and his wealth of knowledge and data will go on largely unappreciated by the mandarins -well in the uk anyway. He has arguable done a lot of good deeds for developing nations over the years under I presume modest funding from the OSDA.

I remember buying the manual as a project.
Got the copper wire, screwed rod, resin, talc, neo magnets from America. Then moved house…. Magnets still hidden in the garage away from everything else…, used the rod, used the copper cable on a gardening project…

Yes Moxi, unless theres loads of profit and complexity no comercial buisness will touch it with a barge pole.Moxi wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 6:05 pm Sadly Mr Gus theres no money in it for the big boys so Hugh and his wealth of knowledge and data will go on largely unappreciated by the mandarins -well in the uk anyway. I know a few enegineers across the world, there reply to me is, " Bloody fantastic, but Your stuff is way to simple, last far to long and not complicated enough to have add ons with bells and whistles to improve the profit margins."
My 3.7m diameter, Hugh Piggot designs, been flying since 2007.
Re: Hugh Piggott in the news
I guess his principal achievement was his realisation than the (then) new neodymium magnets allowed for the building of a direct drive WT as opposed to earlier WT designs that needed a gearbox/belt/chain drive, making his WTs much simpler, much more reliable and efficient. I believe direct drive has been adopted in some large WT designs.
But yes, there's very little corporate appetite for building things to last or be repaired these days.

I have a download of his manual somewhere on the computer, I really fancied building one for the cottage here but you'd probably not get it past planning and the solar has certainly been brilliant since we bought it. Unless you're going off grid, I'm not sure wind makes much sense these days, well at least until Ripple came along
