They are made here and are Hugh Piggotts design and a very simple, robust and cost effective Wind Turbine.

Every year they need maintenance and re-balancing.

And from the last page of this Chapter 18.

After 15 years of Wind Turbines MY CONCLUSIONS in 2022.
Sad to say, that today wind turbines of this size are just NOT COST EFFECTIVE. If I am asked, “Should I put up a wind turbine to make electricity”, I reply, "The sums no longer add up when PV has become such a very cost-effective solution.”
Okay, Costs for me today. I have just installed 3.3kW of PV, static mounting on one of our roofs and used GTI's, and the system all working for $1800. To make a complete Wind Turbine, Mast, controller etc, at a rated 1kW output is about $1900. So, my new PV installation is heading towards being 3 times better value. And added bonus, ‘there are no moving parts to service’.

Your garage roof has a lot of un PV'd area which should be utilised.

I feel very pleased and grateful for your words of wisdom and take away that I should put my own house in order first before I try to fly.
I'm on the right road.but limited funding doesn't help and winters on the way I should concentrate more on my logburner and see if I can fabricate a backboiler 😁👍

How is your main heated room (living room insulation)? & elsewhere.
Years ago, having stuck up a piece of foil faced insulation board against the nearest small connected outer wall we estimated (no flir tech as good as now) that we deflected around 25% extra heat back into the room that would otherwise have pushed off outside through the cavity wall, that was an assisting offcut from a skip, it highlighted the simple seasonal / permanent fix didn't need to cost hundreds of pounds.

Whilst cheap deals on flirs are few & far between finding & sealing those air leaks is a great help & winter is the time to go outside & take measurements with the heat up for a few hours beforehand, if you can borrow one & set up (for whenever) another less exciting but essential project to minimise heat loss

Our heat loss in that one small area showed up the p/poor job of gaps in the cavity wall styrene ball blown insulation from circa 2000.

Plenty of places like seconds & co selling "cheese wedge" sheets for dull but essential jobs if you need to do the wrk, presumably though you got the green energy "deal" via govt scheme? ..if so that should mean you are snowed under by the stuff & high rates on your EPC ?

There are obvious pros & cons to a log burner back boiler, so how bad are your power outs & duration where you are?

A place called Holdstone Down near Combe Martin we did get the government grants and took full advantage of them.
Haven't really had any power cuts to speak of and we currently have a floor standing log burner in the front room with no flue !! Which I intend to address next year with a inset wall mounted burner we will use it more this year as wood is available and the boiler will cost to run hopefully the solar panels will heat the water in the thermal store but it seems like a waste not to be able to utilize the heat generated

Is the inset for style aesthetics or does it have a more practical purpose? (or even just a no brainer mega deal)

We used to have a lot of reading material at the other place as there were a handful with backboilers, but don't think any were inserts, how will that affect maintainence, ..false wall access?

What is the woodburners "to room" heat reduction % & can you all live happily (comfort wise) with that?
As a possible water heater alternative have you checked out the ariston hot water ASHP unit (been out a likely 4 years now so should be plenty of data out there as to performance, costs, ..& diverting it for air con in the summer 😉

We didn't get the chance of ground or air source unfortunately so the plan is to remove the oil boiler and immersion tank from the kitchen and install a outside boiler instead ( got one for £50 due to ground source upgrade down the road )
The thermal store will go in the new bathroom (other end of house) in conjunction with a airing cupboard and the service pipes can then run in the newly made hall way to couple up to the rest of the existing system (60s rads on microbore pipe) the log burner is great but not sure of heat ratio but you have to sit with just your pants on if she's running on point .
The relocation is for a little extra room/space in the front room and as I grabbed a second hand one the other day will be a project for phase 2 next year
