Puy Lentils recipes?

Post by Mr Gus »

I'm looking for low liquid, flavoured lentils as a snack / meal supplement recipes for the instantpot? anyone got anything, the commercial "bags" of cooked lentils at around 80p from lidl / aldi are not easily cleaned nor recyclable, plus as the kid, myself are lentil lovers (not often enough though) & the wife has deigned to commit to more veg less meat having watched that "the game changers documentary"

(i'm happy to chow a box of mostly lentil as a full meal, so is the kid, = less footprint)

All recipes I've come across are heavy on the "wet side" of cooking, not overly suitable for keeping in your bag for a quick warm up & scoff.

Thank you.

I shall take a look, the thing about the "puy" is it has protected status (name, region etc) but in reality its form stays whole & presentation is therefore good rather than a potential slurry like the red / orange lentil.

Its the one you see in the "not recyclable yet" pouches from Jamie Oliver, aldi, lidl, uncle bens & the like, ..the big reason to get some & avoid pouche "convenience"

Any ‘green’ lentil should hold its shape - usually worth trying an Asian supermarket. Obviously won’t be British grown.

Keep meaning to try the Carlin Peas - get a lot of good reviews.

I haven't seen that particular Documentary, however it is famous for not standing up to scrutiny. A desire to eat healthy and lower your impact onthe planet is worthy, but please don't use that docu as a basis for any decision making.

Stinsy.

Which is why I put / made mention of the scrutinisation follow up on you tube elsewhere, it go's without saying to look deeper than a basic film, however if it increases uptake in meatless / meat reduction in meals that's all good, I'm merely mentioning it has incentivised the wife to try a food nemesis (to her) again, she gets nasty when we proffer the lentil.

Less meat, but better meat.

When I've bought green lentils from Sainsbury's they've been in a TetraPak which I've put in the recycling.

edit: Just checked in the cupboard and the pack does say "widely recycled" on it.

Orange lentils go into "Khichri." A recipe which we have from our oldest Engish curry recipe book, maybe 1965! Quite like what is here: http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/23755/in ... ichri.aspx
For the khichri
100g red lentils
100g rice
2 teaspoons ground turmeric
salt to taste

For the tadka
1 tablespoon cooking oil
1 teaspoon whole cumin seed
1 teaspoon crushed chillies
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped coriander

Wash the lentils and rice in several changes of water. Place the lentils and rice in 500ml water in a large saucepan. Add 2 teaspoons of turmeric and salt to taste. Bring it to a boil and then simmer with a cover for about 30 minutes with occasional stirring. Cook until you see that the lentils and rice are almost coarsely blended together.
Remove the pan from the heat and your khichri is ready.
Now its time to prepare your tadka. Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Now lower the heat and then add the whole cumin, crushed chillies and chopped garlic until they are brown until cumin starts to splutter. Now add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. The tadka is now ready to be mixed to the khichri.
Just pour all the tadka in the khichri and mix well. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander when serving.
