winter blackouts, news trickle out (just like covid)

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Horrible stinky old things, we had a few around the house during the blackouts, nearly set fire to the place when one got knocked over. I am sticking with a few rechargeable LED torches. I have a little Caravan system with a 100w inverter that can charge them even if we are without power for days, and with 3 tonnes of good and dry logs for the WBS we won't be shivering. Despite some of us being able to weather the storm reasonably well, if we do suffer extended blackouts it will not be pretty. I am certainly going to be offering our house as a warm refuge for a couple of pensioner neighbours who I think will struggle, my next door neighbour has a four week old baby too which will be a challenge for them.

These are the people Truss couldn't give a f**k about.

The nice thing about the Tilley is that it gives off a fair bit of heat as well as light. I remember having it on in the small front room of an old cottage we lived in for a time and it giving off enough heat to keep that room comfortably warm. Only real downsides with them are the condensation and the slight smell, but I quite like the smell. An uncle's farm that I worked on as a small boy didn't have mains electricity, so used oil lamps, and the smell of the Tilley very much reminds me of spending summer holidays there. They probably weren't really as idyllic as I remember, though.

tilley lamps arent designed for modern air tight builds desp, & its a fallback on a fallback for us, that doesnt overly degrade so a good stand by.

out camping or sitting out all night they can be a great comfort, compared to too close for comfort in a caravan.

the smell? ..yes im not overly a fan but its often preferable to no heat / light so I suck it up, & i would use an air monitor with it as standard (powered off another powerpack out of necessity)

A few (5) solar pir fence lights with 18650's that soak up south facing is a ready to go as extra too, at a fiver a go for mpow u its they work well.

The drip drip of bad news continues, but Nowty Towers could get by with ONLY 3 hours of grid leccy a day. 8-)

Homes face winter power cuts in worst-case scenario, says National Grid
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63155827

"In the unlikely event we were in this situation, it would mean that some customers could be without power for pre-defined periods during a day - generally this is assumed to be for three-hour blocks," said National Grid ESO."

"Customers would be warned in advance about the power cuts, which would occur at peak times, possibly in the morning, or more likely between 4 and 7pm. The cuts would be rotated so not all areas of the country were affected at the same time."

I forgot, (tilley lamps) always hang them up out of the way (I have a few ceiling hooks for just such needs, ..well that & the odd hanging pheasant / smoked ham.

if you are feeling generous desp, try the old folk on an air fryer, i doubt they cook much pizza (well, they might be italian) ...or a modern does it all instantpot clone for about £30 ..they are marvellously frugal & will knock down the worry a few notches, as ive said before, here & "st elsewhere" this sort of kit ought be standard material for low waged & benefits, increasing self reliance, cooking more than stews, tackling the very apparent food bank problem of pre prepped foodstuffs due to "not enough cash to turn on a cooker" ...well **** the cooker, especially now, with the airfryer / instantpot combo our cooker has become redundant, ..may be impacting nationally on frozen pizza sales which may / may not be part of the cost of living index (or whatever) items who knows!?

Potential to save a lot of energy & give a leg up out of debt to needy folk, ..but first find ministers with influence who give a damn who can do better than hand more money over to the energy sector rather than trying to fix the issue.

Yes, up to £20 a month if you use 1/3 less over the winter months, starts 1st Nov.

I'll probably get nothing for using 1/3 less than nothing, although I did get some minimum amount circa 25p from Octopus when I did their trial last winter.
