The reason he has no pension, no savings and is permanently skint is because he's a lazy arse that has avoided work all his life. He's not dim, he's got a better degree than I have. He's just chosen to avoid work all his life.

He's in his 60's now and his latest complaint was that he won't ever be able to retire because his pension will be too small. No point in mentioning that this should come as no surprise to him, as the most he's ever worked is three days a week, and even then he's given up jobs and moved on to working for some other mug if there is so much as a hint that he might be asked to work for more than about 5 or 6 hours a day.

Needless to say his rented house isn't very energy efficient and he's now bleating about his winter energy bill and how the additional benefits payments he's getting aren't going to cover all his winter bills.

I've given up arguing with him about us having subsidised his bone idle lifestyle for the past 40 odd years from our taxes, as he has a sense of entitlement that defies normal logic. Likewise, pointing out that I had two jobs for a fair bit of my working life, three for a time years ago, just to earn enough to be able to afford what we wanted and to earn a reasonably pension, is a pointless argument with him. He simply has no concept of having to work for anything at all, and feels that if he chooses not to work then everyone else has a duty to make sure he can live comfortably.
Entertaining read but what's the 👉? I am sorry you have a relative who is an arse. :D

One of the benefits of getting older is that I simply won't tolerate arse's around me and will let them know. Just tell him to f**k off, it's remarkably effective as an anti arse deterrent.

Probably should have added context, when I typed that the post before was this one from Tinbum (another post had crept in by the time I hit "submit"):

This bloke is a perfect illustration of the sort of person that Tinbum was referring to.

It can also momentarily pop the bubble of self regard, entitlement, total self absorption and denial. Although to be fair, I'd rather leave them behind to their Winter of catfood and frostbite. Those too stupid to find solace in a heated public library and incidentally knowledge at the same time can freeze down nicely to be collected and disposed of in Spring by local council workers. One way they can contribute to the trickle down economy.

National Grid must be getting worried if its suddenly decided to increased its Off Peak incentive scheme nearly 6 fold from 52p / kWh to £3 / kWh. :?

I have not seen the details from Octopus yet apart from its going to be called "Saving Sessions" and November is getting close.

So, for those that have batteries, do we now switch them off and use as much kWh as possible between 4-7pm before joining the scheme?
3.87kWp PV
10.24kWp PV SolarEdge system
Tesla Powerwall 2
100 x 47mm Navitron tubes (still being installed!) Now likely to be removed for more PV.
MK2 PV router DHW diverter
Morso 5kW WBS
Vaillant AroTherm 10kW ASHP
Nissan Leaf

It's a bit unethical, but the way to game the system might be to charge the batteries, cook meals, run the washing machine etc during the peak rate period, before the system starts, then switch to running off the batteries as soon as the payment window opens.
