Growing ginger in the uk.
Growing ginger in the uk.
Whilst thinking this morning about my old "Ginger tosser" (much missed dog scaring tom-cat) it reminded me that we used to grow ginger under glass this came up in my feed..

Maybe one for joe when he gets his growing structure of unknown size & modularity to complement that chili harvest.
(we used some ginger for partial shading of other plants) simple & hardier than people think, with a useful harvest, dont forget to leave that sticker on your sacrificial seeding piece, nor forget to soak it as per video.

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
I tried this a few years back with poor results.
I did soak the ginger but in hindsight, I think I buried the ginger too deep and planted it too late. Some of it rotted, it took a very long time to sprout, and I think I didn't get much more ginger than I used in the first place. But the quality was exceptional.
I might give it another go next year and maybe start it off earlier.

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
Ive grown ginger from supermarket roots in the greenhouse. Looks like a grass when it grows but won't survive a winter and never mananged to harvest any ginger...

Were either of yours on heat mats & cloches or just open to the cold we tended to bag anything we werent sure about & micro climate it.
Also had the advantage of general heating mind you.

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
The secret to growing ginger is:
morning sun only.
do not water once the stems die.

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
Have tried it but not had much joy. Ive seen people have more joy this summer though due to the weather.
Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
They used large ginger root in the water for the footpath pre foot massage in China. Used to use it in hot tub back home too, excellent!

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
Would growing it with additional light from an LED grow light help, do we think?
A neighbour got her tomatoes off to maybe a three or four week head start by using a flat panel LED grow light this year. Maybe the same approach might work, perhaps together with a heat mat, for ginger, fooling it into thinking it was warmer and sunnier here that it really is.

Re: Growing ginger in the uk.
We have so many flights going over us & police / air ambulance that i've been really wary to use a decent sized led array, the idea of bust doors & search warrants for non existent drugs would probably cost the life of at least one dog if they decided to turn up.
would try first with a singular led 60 - 100 grow bulb which is what used a few years back for spot growth on a heated seedling tray. ..even the leds will cost you a lot (usually have fans built in for overhead set ups)in terms of running costs.
