Sizewell C
Sizewell C
More Government backing for Sizewell C - another £700 million in funding. But this still leaves a big gap doesn't it?

I love the statement,
"The announcement comes after ministers also set out plans to reduce energy demand by 15% by 2030, with a new £1bn Eco+ energy efficiency scheme, and a public awareness campaign"
If they mean everything including ICE car FF and domestic gas heating I can agree, but if its just leccy, well mine has doubled since going for a near all electric house with EVs.
Or do they mean peak energy demand with the use of TOU tariffs, I can understand that too.
£1bn, thats about £30 a household, maybe enough to change the lightbulbs.

Re: Sizewell C
I'm assuming it's a reduction in total energy, not leccy. We must be nearing the point that leccy demand starts to go up, having been falling for 10+yrs. Whilst BEV's will be a relatively small and slow increase on demand, maybe 15-20% over 25yrs, I'd have thought heat pumps will have a bigger and faster impact?
Now I'm pondering if it's a reduction in primary energy, such as gas and petrol being less efficient than BEV's and heatpumps, or also a reduction in actual energy consumption, perhaps through insulation etc.?

Re: Sizewell C
Dan,
Hinkley C price has gone up to 25 to 26 billion, 18Billion originally IIRC? and now due on grid in June 2027 so not a good investment really - I can't see Sizewell being any better in terms of delivery and cost.
The government is wafting smoke at the general public who don't realise what a money pit and long-term project Sizewell will be. Your average person in the street would think 700 million to be a good sum of money.

Re: Sizewell C
And today brings more woe for Hinkley C and probably for Sizewell C also - when will the Government wake up to their responsibilities?

Re: Sizewell C
That's a strange article. No actual statement of "there will be more delays"?
Also factually inaccurate about the only EPR running being in Taishan as the Finns have now got theirs going, and the 2nd unit at Taishan is back up and running as well.
But the point about the UK Government basically paying off the Chinese to bust them out of the Sizewell C programme is interesting.

Re: Sizewell C
I might be wrong, but I think the Finnish EPR (Olkiluoto 3) isn't commissioned but undergoing trials, so that might explain the difference.
BTW, it suffered damage to water pumps in the trial, but I don't know if that will delay commissioing.

Was connected to the grid in March and ramped up to its full 1600MW this autumn.

This is good news, our other plants aren't getting any younger.
Re: Sizewell C
Yep, but as that article states, it's under going trials with regular gen scheduled in December, so that may explain why it wasn't included as you asked, but just guessing.dan_b wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 2:59 pm Was connected to the grid in March and ramped up to its full 1600MW this autumn.
