Maybe thinking too hard dan, Tesla is admittedly, mostly cars at this point, but the home battery marketis on the way up, as is battery use generally as we rid ourselves of the 1 year n' replace fiction, ..if he wants to maintain a foothold in solar & elsewhere then battery production AND SALES OF a highly regarded manufacturer is surely worthwhile keeping as much of it as possible in house or in partnership with a big battery compamy to produce & flog on to the vehicle manufacturing market, they had early work with Mercedes so why not again?
Likely not going to happen in the uk, but worth a punt maybe, mega packs, lorry packs, home packs, vehicle packs, carry packs, Moped / motorbike packs,, camper van power packs, decent e-scooter packs that satisfy regs across continental european / western markets rather than the bit of a gamble also ran sellers, (makes compliance on a grand scale easier in theory..the market is growing isn't it?
Mobile home parks solar roof & power packs, ..handy for the weekender market / tick over off-season & possibly a multi roof gerneration opportunity, who knows how much battery & solar are going to drop by influencing wider uptake, how many years now before we hear a builder putting in 15 kWh useable per house & solar as standard permissions to new estate builds?
Anything wrong with the location of the questionable battery factory, with permission already in place? ..detrimental or an incentive?
Cpap home users (+ "type" machines, proliferate, feeder pumps, etc which can use as low as 30 watt hours through to 150 ) & other medical assistance, hospital back up runs on diesel, so thats likely to change / be supplemented by battery storage, in turn new trading/ shopping centre estates with solar battery and r using low cost night to offset daytime running costs? which may be attractive to lease holders in terms of continuity trading when normally power outs = customers out (tesco) ..planning to keep tills operational is a logical move for any supermarket if you discuss costs / losses from those outages..
Weekly back up generator tests for hospitals are quite.a.complex thing, so knocking that off by maybe shifting the test load to a battery is potentially useful as well as reducing testing costs & fuel stock purchasing.

Not quite a gigafactory but at least its a start. It was announced earlier today at Davos.
The plant at Kidlington will produce up to 400MW/h per year of battery modules and fully assembled integrated power systems.

I don't think that works Gus, unless one factory is built per country.
It's far easier, simpler, and probably cheaper to build batts (for stationary use) in mainland Europe, and only have to deal with the additional costs and paperwork for those sold in the UK, rather than have those issues for all production.
Brexit has killed any chance of export business being set up in the UK, as was expected.
For car batteries, Tesla is rolling out battery production alongside the car production, so as you say it would only be stationary batts.
Shame really as the Lathrop facility in the US is aiming to ramp up to 40GWh (annualised) of Megapacks this year, and demand for this type of storage is pretty much unlimited. They are sold out till late 2024 already. I think their nearest competitor (in scale) is aiming for 7 or 8GWh by mid decade. So a UK factory would be great, but far more sensible to locate it within the EU.

It's always been a nigh on certainty as a non starter, where tesla is concerned, however as far as a uk battery market is concerned worth pursuing for home produced renewable energy pursuit at all levels, most wind, but how many turbines are factory built here? (for example) ...must we really be left behind again on our own doorstep?
How is component import export affected by brexit these days, I know a cheesemaker sold up / was absorbed into a larger eu shipping cheese company as they had it down pat.. production has always had hurdles to overcome, many an hour spent rejigging production lines when in transit stock messed us up, still managed 97% projected monthly figures completion which wasnt bad, "last minute supply" & this was a shonky 48 hr factory set up after a big fire at our factory necessitating some quick work.
Where there's a will, etc.

Thought you'd like it.
I try so hard to be positive, and see the potential in things, but sadly I struggle to see how the UK comes back from this mess we've made. Maybe "da yuff" will make friends with mainland Europe via social media, and we'll become closer again in the future.

But we do produce "fine grade graphite" for the anode (graphite makes up around 30% by weight of a battery) ..... ironically as a by product of refining dinosaur juice.
