The rising cost of energy crisis is forcing freight train operators to switch from electric to diesel locomotives because the power is too expensive?

That story may not be as straight forward as it reads.

It may be that the National Grid has requested such companies to do this in order to help the grid. Where I used to work we had two x 5MW backup diesel generators which were used sometimes in winter because the company received compensation payments from the grid operator in return for running off grid during difficult times.
