On forays into UK cities in recent years a lot of high rise balconies exposed for years are now strung with privacy shading, done well this will offer them a bit of windproofing as well (for all the positives & negatives it may bring)

Chris, how soon before councils deem balcony solar "too much" detracting from traditional balconies & likened to black posterboards? ..or do the local councils (seeing seasons with open eyes & understanding seasonal incomes from it) drive it forward?
There have been comments at local council meetings but they have been dismissed as everything complies with regs. Many of the newer buildings still have balconies but not necessarily timber ones, think stainless handrails and uprights with black or brown panels so an ideal fit for solar panels where they would be effectively invisible. Example, although this faces North

I couldn't believe my friend who installs panels has a balcony like this without panels on a house he built himself (he does have panels on the roof East / West but the roof angle is shallow so makes nothing in winter).

Thanks for the details Chris, good to know as it slowly ramps up the previously laughed at vertical solar, presumably this will keep chipping away at the overall price of panels (but not their fixings) as even the worst kind of thicky twins understand low sun in winter, couldn't get for a better example than a mountain village / town in a snow resort / altitude making for useful generation.

Apologies to your partner for making you pop out for "just one more example" if that has been the case

With all this going on, I don't think it will be long before we see domestic vertical solar wall cladding coming to the fore, whether architectural feature add ons for aesthetics or big ole coverage for all the right ECO reasons other than mere architectural EGO jism

Ooh, you've got to pull up the details for that one, bet that looks good on google maps (if it has caught up)

360 degree solar potential? ..lawks

Where is it you little tease?

Afraid I made a mistake, I’m my enthusiasm to think wow what a great building made of PV panels. My son googled it for me and it does joust look like glass☹️

A way it’s in Garda in Italy.

It will happen, you were merely a bit pre-emptive.
Solar power & shading will come of age in architecture like this.

Totally agree with Gus, designs like that are ever more likley to incorporate PV in one way or another. Even low efficiency 'solar glass' with just 4%-7%* makes sense now for large glass sections. For tall glass buildings, the PV generation is a plus, but also the reduced heating, and thereby reduced A/C need can help too.

I think we are all OK to get a little overexcited about all these possibilities, as the options, efficiencies and costs are improving all the time.

*May be better now, v's normal PV at ~22%, and higher efficiency glass is possible, just depends on the level of opacity / shading that's acceptable.
