Balcony solar PV
Re: Balcony solar PV
Thanks for that AGT, hoping my one will last a while! Now thinking to mount inside and buy some sort of four pv cable pass through to affix to porchwall.

Re: Balcony solar PV
I was thinking of a joke/deliberate misinterpretation, like "Wouldn't it power the van better if it was above the load space?" or "Do you have to drive with the side door open to get enough power from it?" or even "have you noticed that it will only work at midday if you are driving west?"

My fave "Do you have to drive with the side door open to get enough power from it?" Properly abstract!
Could also add "watch out, there's a bit of shading at the top"

Re: Balcony solar PV
For anyone in the NE Scotland. The fella I bought this pair of panels from was really decent. Had a good chat on RE. He has other panels of the same size and is willing to sell some more. We spoke about the horrendous freight cost to get pallets this North. He is looking to cover his freight costs by having bought a few extra to punt on.
PM me if interested.

Re: Balcony solar PV
Did you breath in (and pray) as you approached the van with those?
I've been out measuring the area I have in mind for the ground mount. Fence is a little over 2m, and the patch of slate covered garden is 1.4m deep, so some quick calcs suggest I can get away with a lovely 55d to 70d pitch with 2m by 1.1m panels (vertical) as the panels will 'only' stick out 1.1m to 1.3m at the bottom.
Maybe next year, if battery prices settle back down, and I can get it all done as a single job. Fingers crossed.

I went there assuming (always deadly) that they were about 60mm shorter. What a laugh we had!Mart wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:36 amDid you breath in (and pray) as you approached the van with those?

As Granny used to say "what's fur ye willnae gae by ye". So true. That's some serious panelage Mart! Will they be new or are that size available on 2bd hand market?
I am absolutely itching to get going with this but all the pieces aren't here.
Can start looking at forming and trial fitting brackets maybe once the art installation is complete.
It's getting there.

Your artwork could go missing if the propane cylinder has a bad day.
Gas volume is 270 times bigger than the cylinder size.
Best to have Barbie Q down the end of the garden.

Re: Balcony solar PV
Hi Joeboy, no plans as such for the panels, just going with the flow, but noticed over the last year or two, that the selection of 2m panels is growing, so that seems more sensible (as I have the fence height to hide them on the backside) going forward. Originally I had 4 panels in mind, but with the extra height, and the fact that these panels seem to be getting wider too, then 3 panels of maybe 500Wp might do the trick. I'm planning to simply go with a cheapish new panel, when the time comes, something mid range, maybe for 3 I'll get lucky and find some clearance.
I kinda feel bad talking about this so much, given that the idea has been on the go for 2yrs or so, and I've done nothing. But I need to install them as DC feed to batts, and get the batts installed on a zero export permission, as I'm at the limit with the DNO. Hence I'm watching, waiting and pondering what to do about batts, and hoping their prices come back down, after the spike following the leccy price jump (Ukraine invasion).
