Fair point Gus, I won't forget that, thank you. I think we're about 5 hrs into the cut. So far, lessons learned. Have a FF back up (gas). Dubai 4W'ers are worth heehaw in this evenings test. Seals first album sounds even better 28 yrs later and tea made by FF tastes just fine.

If you ain't got aircon a 5V fan is your friend.

As an aside, the village is largely in darkness, scooters & cars are the lights I'm seeing from lower front balcony. Most commercial premises down the town have back up gennys. Back here in Res area I can see one candle, the rest is in darkness.

A screw on ceramic water filter & a couple of lidded buckets, bottom one with a tap seated, & you doubtless have a pool very nearby, if you have a quake & it doesn't empty it will do, decent ceramic filter will make pool water palatable for sure (just no backflow cleaning ability so you use a cloth wrap to catch larger detritus as a pre-strainer) ..of course a drinking pouch is portable & allows you to roam / move about an area, I would always have a lifestraw on me as a back up for quick puddle sips as you go to preserve a carried supply if forced to scoot rather than wait for inundated emergency services.

A food grade lidded brew type barrel is typically an easy find, a ceramic filter, a lever action spigot tap, some ptfe tape etc not so after a catastrophe.

The point of putting salt water in plastic tubs in your freezer rather than pure water is to adjust the melting point of the water. This means that in a power cut the temperature in the freezer cannot drop below the melting point of your brine until it has all melted. Keeping your freezer at -15℃ is more useful than keeping it at 0℃.

Well, that was effortless. Set up two 5V usb fans blowing straight at me and didn't wake in the night. Slept like a log

I find it akin to magic that I can be talking to SWMBO back in Scotland and its solar powered at both ends. The small DC step up unit from aliexpress has a 9V & 12V switch. The network box is pulling 9.3V on average.

Power is back on.

I always have a full spare 19ltr water bottle on standby and the working one. Along with around 5ltrs drinking water in the fridge. Oh yeah and a couple of bottles of Schweppes tonic water. One must maintain standards.

But the reality may well be that in an emergency non salted is preferable as an emergency source of water if a turkish disaster (another quake hits) it wouldnt taste great but could be treated & purified more quickly than for saltwater removal in a crunch situation compared to desalination.

I saw a picture yesterday. A cup of frozen water with a coin placed on top.

Use as an indicator if away from home for a while to show if the powercut was a bad one and freezer contents wrecked.

A simple use of gravity, I thought it a smashing idea?

Wonderful old school logic there joe, would try & find something decent in S/ steel washer or something you know how nasty potentially coins are that are cheapened with mixed metal etc..(that way you maintain the weight too for the sinking in slush aspect & preserve the principle.
