Re: Small things matter
21kw apparantly, its quite big and can take logs over 800mm long. never worked it that hard else we'd roast and it already drys your eyeballs out.

Wow, our one is 4 to 6kWh max and stops at 280mm logs. I'd be cooking spitted pigs on your one

Re: Small things matter
21kW? In Cornwall?
A 3kW WBS is probably plenty!
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
5x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (12kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger
(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Re: Small things matter
We have a combined 13kW, 5kW in the play room (old dinning room) and 8kW in the lounge and on the odd occasion where we have run both together it gets uncomfortably hot very very quickly.
I do recall a conversation with the old chap who installed our burners where he said the inset stoves are generally selected at a higher output because they have fewer radiant surfaces to direct heat in to the room - this was following a discussion about an inset at my old house.
I can sort of see the logic in so far as the WBS I have are radiating on all sides where the inset is radiating on the front face only and the insulated jacket reduces the conducted heat to the wall.
Nice fire though and the ability to charge 800mm logs nice!

Re: Small things matter
I have an inset and a normal woodburner, and I echo Moxi’s comments about the radiant surface issues.
Re: Small things matter
We're off the main gas grid so its log fire or expensive electric, we were also planning a 'roof off add an extra floor on top' extension to the bungalow, so the fire was sized to cope with that.
So yeah definately oversized. With all the insulation however, we can burn it for a few hours, get upto 23-24 sort of temp then let it go out until the same time the next evening and we stay above 20 quite happily for the 24 hours.
It is a BEAST.
Here's a rubbish picture of the rear. 16 x 6" warm air ducts in total (you cant seen em all in photo) 8 suck in cool air and the other 8 pump out roasting air by convection. The fire boarding used to get so hot i had to replace it with a stainless grill to disperse the heat to the hallway.
p.s. excuse the mess, using the hall to store crap at the moment lol

Re: Small things matter
I retract my earlier comment regards inset stoves as yours is something of an hybrid, I haven't seen one like that in the UK before but clearly unlike a traditional inset you do benefit from convection from the back top and sides of the stove.
Kind of remind me of the huge chequer brick mass stoves beloved of Scandinavian and eastern European homes.

Re: Small things matter
Yes Moxi, in essence its a fire mounted inside a separate second metal box with vents, so the radiant heat from the front and convection from the trapped air. The TV in the picture is a 55" so goes someway to explaining how big it is.
