Its human nature for people to get things wrong, what defines us as a civilisation is how we respond. I've always found the forum to be very tolerant, so I would always advise that if someone gets something wrong and you know the correct form then drop them a pm to help them understand the right units.

If we fail to help each other then are we not failing ourselves ?

kW = kilowatt
MW = megawatt
GW = gigawatt

To convert between these, you can use the following:

1 kW = 1,000 W
1 MW = 1,000 kW
1 GW = 1,000 MW

Why is there a Sqigually thing between the 1 and the 000

I thought 1 kW=1000W :oO:
I could be very wrong Alan, but I remember asking about the comma once and was told it was simply there to make it easier to differentiate between thousands, millions, billions etc etc 1,000 1,000,000 1,000,000,000 or you can change the unit up k, M, G etc etc but then the Giga always seems to me a bit odd as in why isnt it a Biga as Billion starts with a B?

I look forward to learning the answers

I was told that Billion was a shortening of Bi million and that it meant million times a million inthe UK. In the US it got changed to 1000 million and that has now been generally accepted elsewhere.

Giga comes from the greek for giant and I believe that its use started during or shortly after WW2.

I could never understand why kilo ues lower case k where as every other common* prefix with a power greater than 1 uses a capital and every one lower than 0 uses lower case. Anyone know why?

* deca da and hecto h seem scarce other than use in hectares

20 or more years ago we found that a common measure for wine was "dva detsi" (2 decilitres) in Yugoslavia.
And by coincidence also to do with booze I think the brewing industyry work with units of hectolitres (don't think they bother with the H even though the power is >1.
A
2.0 kW/4.62 MWh pa in Ripples, 4.5 kWp W-facing pv, 9.5 kWh batt

You mean h :D as I said seems k, h and da are lower case and why da for 10 I have no idea (maybe it was the french :evil: )

H is used for Henry.

Most soft drinks seem to come in 2hl size (or is it 2hL), maybe that is related.

Just gets confusing if you go to that there Europe< where they swap the "," and the "."
Caused no end of confusion - not to mention wrong calculations when a visiting German engineer used one of our standard excel sheets, but with a German keyboard it managed to get thousands and decimals mixed up - wrong loads applied to the test bearing!!

the French do seem to like their 'deca' units - test loads from a large French car maker are all in DaN

Why Dont Weee go back tooo basics

and

convert watee things back to HorseE Power. :norfolk:

I thought One HorseE Power was equal tooo equal to 745.69987158227022 watts

With the calculator its 735.499 watts.

What Days of the weeek is it 745.69987158227022 watts and Watt Days is it 735.499 watts. :facepalm: :fight: :pot-stir: :cat-shock:
