~£20 a year I pay to top it up, it really is just the occasional text or call. I'm not good business for the network providers which is why genuine PAYG tariffs are being phased out.
That's us too (at the moment.) I'm with EE, now part of BT from which we get our broadband and phone too. The local shop asked whether they might be able to give me a better deal if I bundled the mobile phone in, but guessed it was unlikely at our level of mobile useage.
Anyway, thanks everyone for the comments about phones and contracts, we shall bear them in mind.

My latest phone I actually bought, it was an 02 refurb of a sony phone, either £69 or sub £80 when the same phone was still selling for around £150
I'd have kept my old phone (still have it) but "apps" just didn't work on it, great on the mountains for basic contact though (bullet proof in its leather case too)
keep looking at the refurb deals there are some good spots for PAYG, peak seasonal phone trade is happening about now to jan, so by march the stock will be re-packed & sold, ..of course black friday refurb / repack stock may have been prepared & sitting ready.
