Wind proof bin store

#1

Post by Moxi »

As quite a few of you might know, I live in an elevated area with far unhindered exposure to Westerly winds swinging from SSW through to NNW, as a result we routinely get 30mph to 60mph gusts and in winter quite a few days that can get up towards 85+mph.

It cost me a solar panel a while back which was annoying but not as annoying as the monthly damage and destruction of the recycling and household waste bins as well as the litter strewn across the mountainside.

So recently I decided it was high time I built a more robust bin refuge, this needed to be in a location directly adjacent to the collection point so that the bins would still be available for collection once every three weeks for the household waste and weekly for the recycling boxes.

I decided on Gabion baskets to provide the necessary wind deflection and offer a strong anchor point, these would be filled from the copious waste slate and overburden tips that pepper the maintains around where I live so a little bit of upcycling of waste material potentially, and creating a habitat for insects, local sand lizards etc. The gabions were 1m x 0.8m x 0.3m two were set at 1m high and tied in at right angles to two set at 0.8m high the old fence line was then cut and will be tied in to the 0.8m basket ends to retain the fence exclusion for the wondering sheep and cattle.

Looks good Moxi and solves a troublesome issue nicely.
Similar experience with the winds down here on the clifftop in the SW.
Daft council give us small hession sacks for our recycling, no end of them and the rubbish scattered all over the town when the winds blow.
Good solution there fella :xl:

Good use for gabion baskets!

Don’t suffer the wind problems, just hate having 4 wheelie bins in the drive at the front of the house..

Thanks Resybaby,

Here's a few more photos taken in the miserable weather today, two baskets filled off and the other two just requiring one more layer before the lids are put on, I thought I would try to add a bit of solar to the installation to make use of the not insubstantial ballast from the four gabions, around 1.4 tonnes using a very conservative density, closer to 2 tonne if you pick a more likely density for larger ballast stone. Either way it should be sufficient for my needs.

The idea will be to put a 400 Watt panel bought earlier this year for city plumbing on the strong back that pivots between the uprights, allowing an east to west tracking motion, obviously the turbine building (shed although I do wish it had a steam turbine in there :D ) will shade the panel at different levels depending on the time of year and the need to lift the bin lids to drop bags in limits the slop to the south to a very small 6ish degrees but this is a prototype and better than a static east facing panel only IMHO. The wind figures were : 100mph at 90 degrees =284.5kg force - I take this to be the very worst case as the panel area is slightly over calculated, the panel would never be at 90 degrees to the prevailing wind, we have only ever seen one gust of wind exceed 100mph (105mph) and we have at least 5 times the ballast required. more realistic wind loads would be of the order of 73kgf or 60mph at 45 degrees.

Just need the winds to abate so I can get the panel in place now and wired in to the adjacent Junction box.

oooooh, extra panel i like the sound of that (you guys have clearly 'corrupted'me)
We have one wheely bin here, had to chain it to a wall as the wind sends it scurrying off down the drive/road else.
One tip i have is one of those hooked stretchy cord things, through the handles and over the top of the lid to secure that down. Had two bins with the lid ripped off with the strong winds now and that bodge has worked a treat since.

Unless that shed is TARDIS's like I think you might struggle to fit that size of turbine in there.

Though you could pin this up on the wall as a nod to the makers.

I did find a slightly smaller one at 25000kW for sale in Turkey that Joeboy could potentially dismantle and hand carry back during his regular Turkey visits...

Yeah we are heavy duty users of elasticated bungee cords of various sizes to keep the lid on the sand pit, small solar panel on mobile mount, bin lids in situ, bin boxes on their carts, etc etc etc one of life’s essential inventions imho.

Hi Fintray,

That plate was presented to my dad who worked on that particular turbine at Rotherham coal fired power station which was closed in 1978.

As a boy growing up in South Yorkshire these small coal fired stations were in every town and a familiar sight. As they closed the Trent class power stations in the Trent basin came on line, significantly larger units with Drax being the largest. Dad worked on a lot of these units too while on mobility service with the CEGB.

Funnily enough I was in Rotherham today to attend a family funeral and I drove past the old power station site and you really wouldn’t believe that they had a coal fired power station and ancillary plants on such a narrow tiny site!

Air quality is much better these days and as a kid I remember specialist asbestos removal contractors spending nearly a year removing all manner of asbestos material from the site before it was demolished and cleared in a mere 3 months.

Lots of lovely wind turbines across the moors at woodhead and adjacent to the M 1 just south of Rotherham, apologies no photos as my head wasn’t in the game earlier.
