Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme
I haven't engaged with anyone from the Loch Kemp proposal so am just guessing but have wondered if one of the attractions of the site is that it is only a couple of km from Corriegarth windfarm and so they could have their own direct connection between wind farm and psh and bypass the grid charges.

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme
I doubt it. Potential 69MW (on a few occasions) but only around 20MW on a more regular/average basis. Can the pumped hydro absorb wind generated power while feeding the grid? The pumped hydro grid connection would need to be increased beyond 600 MW?
I expect the projects will be looking at their options, all the same.

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme
I might be miscounting or double counting, but just this thread seems to mention ~7GW of new(?) power delivery. That's a staggering amount of balancing for excess / shortfalls of wind energy in Scotland.

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme
I make it an additional 7.45GWp and thats not including the Glen Eearach one as I cannot find details of its capacity.
Most battery storage plants only run for 1 or 2 hours at max capacity but some of these pumped storage plants can run for much longer with the Balliemeanoch one alone giving 1.5GW for 30 hours.

Is this the correct project?nowty wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2024 12:17 pmI make it an additional 7.45GWp and thats not including the Glen Eearach one as I cannot find details of its capacity.

GEE made several claims about the project, including that it would be using “water more efficiently than any existing or proposed pumped storage project in the UK” and that it would be “bigger than any other proposal or existing facility on Loch Ness in terms of size and power generation capacity”, which it listed as 2GW and 30GWh respectively.
Looks like those numbers are correct.

9.45GWp it is then.
Assuming they all get built of course.

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme
Having been on a short cruise, six miles total only on Loch ness this week has anybody else wondered just how many pumped hydro schemes it and Loch Locky could support both power and energy wise even if only hypothetically?
After all the technology has existed for decades so nothing really new just the desire to get on with it and solve our future energy needs away from FF's and Nuclear.
Just asking .
