Thought inverters did insulation resistance tests before energising?
Also wonder if fuses in the string would help mitigate the risk?

You'd need the fuses at the pv end.

Yes i know, some kind of PV combiner box/ fuse set up , but I suppose access becomes a challenge for these things….
